I'm Still Thinking About Lee Jung-jae's Performance In Star Wars' The Acolyte, And I Need To Talk About It

As a long-time fan of both Lee Jung-jae and Star Wars, I must say that witnessing his portrayal of Sol was nothing short of breathtaking. Having followed his career since his days on Korean dramas like “Warriors of the Dawn,” it’s incredible to see him take on such a significant role in a global phenomenon like Star Wars.

Major spoilers for The Acolyte lie ahead, so read on at your own risk.

In the past few months, new Star Wars TV shows and films have sparked diverse opinions among fans, and The Acolyte was no exception. While some criticized the show for several reasons (some even seemed to unfairly review-bomb it), others were captivated by it, acknowledging Leslye Headland’s valuable additions to the Star Wars lore. One of the fresh aspects that drew attention was Lee Jung-jae’s portrayal, who played Jedi Master Sol. The South Korean actor’s performance was universally acclaimed, with many – both fans and critics – highlighting his work as a series standout. I can’t stop thinking about Jung-jae’s outstanding performance myself, and I really want to discuss it further.

In the ensemble of The Acolyte, Amandla Stenberg stands out as she convincingly plays twin sisters Osha and Mae Aniseyal. Yet, I believe Lee Jung-jae’s acting leaves a stronger impression in certain aspects. It’s important to clarify that this doesn’t diminish Stenberg’s performance in any way; rather, there are specific aspects of Jung-jae’s portrayal that have left a lasting impact since the series concluded. So, what exactly are these elements? Let’s delve into them without further ado.

Lee Jung-jae Exudes The Vibes That Are Perfect For A Jedi

It honestly does feel like there are some actors who are just perfect for Jedi roles. Liam Neeson is such a performer, as he gives off the badass vibes that one might associate with a Force-user. The same is true of Samuel L. Jackson, who stunningly brought the character of Mace Windu to life. One also has to mention that both Alec Guinness and Ewan McGregor were perfect for the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi. And it’s hard to overlook Rosario Dawson’s performance as Ahsoka Tano (who was originated by the impeccable Ashley Eckstein).

Currently, Lee Jung-jae is taking after the renowned actors mentioned earlier, and it seems as though his role in the Jedi Order was predestined. When it was announced that he would be starring in Typhoon, it felt like a natural choice. After all, he’s proven himself to be a talented actor with films such as The Thieves, Deliver Us from Evil, New World, and Assasination. Furthermore, Jung-jae exudes an undeniable charm that consistently stands out when he’s on screen.

As a gamer, I had high hopes for the South Korean actor in this show, but he blew me away once I tuned in. He’s got an understated physical presence that’s truly impressive, much like some of the legendary Star Wars characters. And let me tell you, when he puts on that Jedi robe, it’s pure magic. The Sandglass star’s voice is nothing short of amazing – it’s both menacing and soothing at the same time.

In summary, the Emmy winner indeed possesses qualities typically associated with a lightsaber-wielding character. However, being a guardian of the galaxy involves much more than merely appearing and sounding impressive. Fortunately, the actor portraying Sol not only fits the aesthetic but also demonstrates strong acting skills, which is crucial for the role.

The Sol Actor Gives A Very Nuanced Performance On The Acolyte

It’s clear that anyone who has watched the most recent Star Wars series will agree that the character Sol is far from simple. Though he’s a devoted member of the Jedi Order, as the story unfolds we learn that this skilled swordsman has made a decision that raises doubts, a burden he’s carried for years. Lee Jung-jae expertly portrays Sol’s multifaceted personality, from his unwavering commitment to peace to his tense reactions in perilous situations. Moreover, Jung-jae adds authentic warmth to the character, particularly when he interacts with his students, making it palpable in their shared scenes.

However, it’s the depth of his connection with his students that eventually results in his demise. In the climax, Sol confesses to his former apprentice, Osha, about the incident from years past where he took her mother’s life (believing she was going to attack him). The Housemaid actor truly excels in this scene as Sol delivers his final words, a heartfelt plea defending his actions. He stands firm on his conviction that removing Osha from Brendok and training her as a Jedi was the right choice, despite the fact that Osha’s mother and the coven of witches who raised her met their end in the process.

Although viewers might argue about whether Sol was right or wrong, there’s no denying that Jung-jae delivers the character’s last scenes flawlessly. His unwavering commitment to the role undeniably evokes a sense of respect for Sol’s firmness. This is why it remains heartbreaking when Osha ultimately kills him in the end.

It’s unfortunate that the protagonist has merged with the Force, but credit is due to Jung-jae for successfully crafting a captivating character in just eight episodes, a feat made more impressive given it was his debut English language role and he spent months working with dialogue coaches. That’s quite impressive indeed!

When It Comes To Physicality, Lee Jung-jae Rises To The Occasion

As I, a gamer, step into the role of a Jedi in live-action Star Wars, I’m well aware that the physical aspects are a significant part of the job. Mostly, it’s about mastering the skillfully designed lightsaber combat sequences. This was no different for my character, as he too has experience with such challenges, evident from his roles in various action-packed movies. Additionally, the demanding physical requirements were also present when I portrayed Seong Gi-hun in Squid Game.

The Warriors of the Dawn star definitely pulled off the stunt work necessary for his role. He absolutely shined during the lightsaber fights, and that was particularly true when it came to the massive brawl between Sol, his fellow Jedi and Manny Jacinto’s (thirst trap-inducing) Stranger. The two characters eventually came to blows again during the season finale and, while it wasn’t quite as long, the fight was still a stunning presentation of how compelling an on-screen duel can be when two actors really commit. Needless to say, I have nothing but praise for the Sol actor’s dedication stunt-wise.

Lee Jung-jae’s Casting Marks A Major Step Forward For Star Wars When It Comes To Representation

It’s important to discuss the impact of Lee Jung-jae’s character Sol in the role of a Jedi master, particularly from a diversity perspective, not only for the Star Wars franchise but also for mainstream entertainment overall. With his portrayal, Jung-jae becomes the first Asian actor to hold such a significant position in this longstanding franchise, which is remarkable considering its nearly 50-year history. Many might argue that it’s taken quite some time for George Lucas’ legendary IP to diversify its characters. However, progress has been made over the last few years, and if the rumors are true, The Acolyte could boast the most diverse Star Wars ensemble yet assembled.

Representation has definitely become something of a buzzword in this day and age, but that shouldn’t detract from how vital it should be within the media landscape. When it comes to this particular case, one shouldn’t understate the importance of viewers seeing a Korean Jedi on screen. I’m not of Asian descent, so I can’t specifically speak from the perspective of those who are and ultimately connected with Sol. What I can say is that I recognize how impactful representation can be, even when it comes to Star Wars. I still remember being 8 years old and being excited to see Samuel L. Jackson’s Mace Windu wield his lightsaber when Attack of the Clones hit theaters in 2002.

It’s quite possible that many spectators shared the same sentiment upon seeing Sol on screen for the first time. What makes this particularly heartening is that Lee Jung-jae’s captivating performance can now be appreciated by audiences to come. While Hollywood has room for improvement in terms of diversity, his portrayal of a Jedi character is undeniably a significant achievement that fans from all backgrounds should applaud.

It’s clear that Jung-jae’s portrayal of Sol will linger in my memory for a while. My opinions about the character and his ethics might evolve as I ponder more, but I’ll consistently admire Jung-jae for giving a remarkable performance, and I believe he truly deserves the praise for it.
