The following discussion contains spoilers for Season 3 of Invincible. If you haven’t watched the first six episodes yet, you can catch up by streaming them with an Amazon Prime subscription right now.
In the 2025 TV lineup, Invincible Season 3 is taking flight, delivering the high-octane action and heartfelt drama that the show is recognized for. However, this season has seen a unique twist with the character Rex-Splode, voiced by Jason Mantzoukas. From rebuilding a team to preparing meals using a meal kit, Rex has undergone quite a ride this season, and I’ve found myself unexpectedly fond of him. That’s why I was delighted to chat with Mantzoukas himself about the character’s transformation.
Mr. Manzoukas graciously chatted with TopMob about the upcoming third season of the Robert Kirkman-produced series. The humorist didn’t shy away when discussing his affection for the program, and since he had already read the “Invincible” comics before being selected for the role, he was aware of the plot twists ahead. Unsurprisingly, he expressed his hope that Rex’s captivating tale would be portrayed well in the show.
It was uncertain if he would appear in the series since I wasn’t aware of how the plot would develop, but I had followed the Invincible comic book as it was being published. Over about 12 to 15 years, I read that comic and grew fond of it. As a result, I am familiar with the storyline and believe it is well-suited for Rex. It’s an excellent story in its own right.
Season 3 of Invincible is packed with action! Omni-Man makes a grand comeback, while Mark and Eve navigate their romantic entanglements. Meanwhile, Rex emerges as a memorable character, grappling with an unclear future alongside other Guardians of the Globe members. Jason Mantzoukas humorously referred to this as a “Rex-Splode story,” and I wholeheartedly concur – watching Rex’s evolving narrative has been quite entertaining!
In many aspects, Rex seems to be the central figure in this story, as far as I’m concerned. Just keep that between us, but I’d almost say it’s more accurately titled “The Rex-Splode Story.” Given the nature of this comic tale, when I first heard about it, I found myself wishing they’d delve into the Rex narrative. What sets Robert’s writing apart is that every character experiences growth. Over such a long-form series, he eventually gives everyone a chance to grow. To be honest, during those initial seasons, I enjoyed the humor, the boldness, and the audacity. And let’s not forget, Rex was quite the jerk – the epitome of team douchebaggery. However, it’s fascinating now to portray a character who’s struggling with trauma from the Lizard League battle, trying to mature.
In Season 2, Rex-Splode and Shrinking Rae came close to being eliminated by the Lizard League in a fierce battle, leaving many to believe they were destined to depart from this world. Miraculously, they survived, and their ordeal has greatly impacted them since then. Rex, for one, has been striving to improve himself as a teammate and individual, which has brought him closer to Rae. Their stories have proved captivating to follow.
It’s clear beyond doubt that the story of Invincible centers around Mark Grayson. Yet, Jason Mantzoukas suggests that it also functions as a journey of maturity for Rex, and his perspective is logical: indeed, it appears to be a narrative of self-discovery and growth for this character too.
From an aged cinephile perspective, this narrative seems to be a journey of self-discovery for the character Rexplode. Despite my advanced years compared to his, he remains a young soul, barely out of his teenage years. This age gap can be disconcerting when viewing him as an older individual. However, it’s precisely his youth that makes this tale intriguing.
Rexplode is on the cusp of understanding empathy, kindness, and generosity towards others. His struggle between his past self and the person he is growing into is a fascinating dynamic to portray, and the authors do an exceptional job capturing it.
Frankly, I’ve never been particularly fond of Rex, primarily due to his overbearing arrogance and risky actions. Although he has extinguished a few fires in the past, he’s also ignited some. However, Season 3 has significantly changed my viewpoint on him. The idea that this is a “growing-up” story for him resonates deeply because, being raised under the government, he never had a conventional upbringing. Now, as he grapples with his past and future, it’s delightful to witness him evolve into one of the series’ most complex characters.
In summary, “Invincible” stands out as an exceptional superhero series and ranks among the top original shows on Amazon Prime overall. A significant factor contributing to its excellence lies in the skillfully crafted characters. Additionally, the intense action sequences are sure to keep audiences gripped with anticipation.
Currently, I can hardly wait to uncover what lies ahead for Rex, and it seems strange that I even uttered those words! Jason Mantzoukas is equally excited about the upcoming events, hoping to witness further development in the character’s dynamic personality. Catch up on these events by tuning into the latest episodes of Invincible, available every Thursday on Prime Video.
