As a long-time resident of the Sunshine State and a devoted movie buff, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia when it comes to the news about Bad Monkey‘s move from Florida to LA for Season 2. You see, I’ve spent countless hours navigating the winding roads of the Keys, and I’ve even had my fair share of man dates with alligators – thanks for asking, Zach Braff!
When I think of Bad Monkey, I immediately think of Florida. Honestly, the Florida Keys are a character in the quirky whodunnit that’s based on Carl Hiaasen’s novels. So, I’m thrilled that we’ll get to spend another season with Vince Vaughn’s Yancy solving crimes in this wild place. However, I’m upset that production is reportedly moving to Los Angeles for Season 2 rather than filming it all on location.
Apple TV+ Has Renewed Bad Monkey For A Second Season
Approximately a few months following the initial airing schedule for “Bad Monkey,” Apple TV+ confirmed the series’ return for a second season. The show is an adaptation from Carl Hiaasen’s literary works, as reported by Deadline. In contrast to previous seasons, the upcoming Season 2 will not be based on one of the author’s books but will instead draw inspiration from it, offering an original storyline.
According to a recent announcement regarding the continuation of the highly-acclaimed Apple TV+ series, its enigmatic comedy’s mastermind and co-producer, Bill Lawrence, stated:
I hope that people know that Carl Hiaasen is an idol of mine and an inspiration for me as a write. To get to go on telling his story with Vince Vaughn and this great cast, at least the characters who are still alive, is very exciting. I’m very thankful to our partners at Apple TV+ and Warner Bros, as well as the entire team that helps bring this show to life.
Excited by Lawrence’s passion for the project and impressed by Vince Vaughn’s performance along with the rest of the cast in it, I eagerly anticipate the return of Andrew Yancy. Yet, a reported update on the location where they’ll shoot this season has left me feeling uneasy and concerned.
However, Production Will Reportedly Move From Florida To LA, And I Don’t Love That
Back in the beginning of this year, I had a chat with Bill Lawrence about “Bad Monkey”. He mentioned that Carl Hiaasen was rather particular about the production, insisting it be filmed in Florida. So, we complied, and boy, did that decision lead to some unpredictable wildlife encounters and comedic challenges! It also brought an authentic tropical vibe to our project, making the location an integral part of the storyline.
It seems that according to a report by Deadline, it’s been indicated that Season 2 will shift from Miami and the Florida Keys to LA. This information originated from sources who conversed with the publication, and they suggested that this change was crucial for Los Angeles-based Vaughn, as well as mentioning that the crew encountered numerous weather-related hurdles while filming Season 1 in their original location.
The report makes it clear that they’ll film “on-location scenes” in Florida, suggesting we might see stunning landscapes and vibrant wildlife on the show. Yet, it seems there will be fewer of these scenes, and this reduction leaves me disappointed.
I spoke to the cast of Bad Monkey about Florida playing a character in this show – with Zach Braff even telling me a story about a “man date” he went on with Rob Delaney that involved alligators – and it was clear that it had a big impact. I loved seeing Vaughn’s Yancy traverse around The Keys and the characters solving crimes on beaches. I also was a big fan of the deer, turtles and other wildlife that played a big part in the show. Overall, I think it’s best when projects like this can be filmed on location, because it really adds a level of immersion that’s hard to fully get on a set.
As a movie enthusiast, I can certainly understand the strategic reasoning behind this decision. With several members of the cast residing in LA, coupled with Bill Lawrence’s ongoing commitments like Season 3 of “Shrinking” on HBO and a reboot of “Scrubs,” it would indeed be challenging to relocate to Florida. Filming on local sets seems more practical, allowing for easier pick-up of exteriors later on. It’s all about balancing artistic visions with logistical realities.
Despite this change, I’m still feeling quite disappointed about it. One of the things that made Bad Monkey so appealing to me was its unique and genuine vibe, which came from actually shooting it in Florida. Although I believe they can sustain it, given that they’ve already developed the characters and their settings, it’s still hard to accept.
Don’t get it twisted though, I’ll still be tuned in to watch Season 2 with my Apple TV+ subscription whenever it comes out, and I’ll likely enjoy it too. I’ll just miss that extra bit of Florida flair.
