Imax CEO Says Impact of Hollywood Strikes, Pandemic Is “Firmly Behind Us”

As a devoted follower of the movie industry and a long-time admirer of Imax Corporation, I am thrilled to see CEO Richard Gelfond expressing such optimism and confidence in the company’s future. After the tumultuous events of last year, with Hollywood strikes and the lingering pandemic causing disruptions, it is heartening to hear that we are now past those challenges.

According to Imax CEO Richard Gelfond, the effects of last year’s Hollywood strikes and the ongoing pandemic are now behind us.

“After overcoming the strikes and dealing with the lingering impacts of the pandemic, we are now well-positioned to maximally reap the advantages of our robust, low-asset business model,” Gelfond stated in a release of the company’s second quarter earnings report.

Imax’s premium clients, who are top executives at major exhibitors and primary purchasers of Imax theater systems, have experienced a significant loss of confidence following cinema closures during the pandemic and the disruptive impact of last year’s Hollywood writers and actors strikes on their film supply chain. However, optimism could provide solace for these individuals.

“Gelfond stated that the second quarter showed clear signs of a turning point in our business. Our system sales have been brisk, installations have increased noticeably, and our schedule through 2026 looks promising, stronger than ever before,” is one possible way to paraphrase this statement.

At the film tech firm, Hollywood’s robust box office rebound in the larger movie industry was highlighted, despite a 9% revenue decrease to $89 million, compared to the $98 million earned in the previous year. Profits also took a hit, falling from $8.4 million in 2023 to just $3.4 million.

In the second quarter, Imax earned a global box office totaling $196.4 million. A significant contribution to this came from Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2,” which brought in large revenues on Imax screens during June. This film broke records as the highest-grossing animated Hollywood production of all time at the worldwide box office.

In the second quarter of this year, Imax was home to several successful movies apart from “Mission: Impossible – Fallout”. Some of these films were “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes”, “Furiosa”, and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire”. Additionally, Amazon Prime Video acquired the rights to screen Imax’s original documentary titled “The Blue Angels“, which focuses on the pilots of the U.S. Navy’s renowned aerobatics team.

The documentary film brought in over $2.2 million from Imax showings, setting a new record for the company’s most successful theatrical release opening this year. In terms of expansion, Imax reported installing 4 more theater systems during Q2 compared to the same period last year.

As a gamer, I can tell you that during the last quarter, Imax added 4% more theater locations to its global network, reaching a total of 1705. Plus, there’s an impressive lineup of 504 Imax theater systems waiting to be installed in the future.
