Imax, Muvi Cinemas Opens First Giant Screen in Saudi Arabia

As a cinephile who’s been around the block a few times, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement as I witness the expansion of Imax into new territories, such as Saudi Arabia. The opening of their first giant screen location in Jeddah with Muvi Cinemas is not just a testament to the growing film industry in the region, but also a step towards a more diverse and inclusive global cinema landscape.

Just before the Red Sea Film Festival kicks off on Thursday, IMAX has officially unveiled its first large-screen theater in Jeddah, in partnership with Muvi Cinemas, Saudi Arabia’s leading cinema chain.

The newest Imax theater opening globally aligns with the cinema technology company’s strategy to feature a wider variety of local language films on its worldwide theaters. Next year, Muvi Mall of Arabia will debut the first Arabic language feature film on Imax screens, titled “Ambulance”, an action comedy starring Ibrahim Hajjaj and Muhammed Al-Qahtani, under the direction of Colin Teague.

Currently, the Mall of Arabia cinema complex has launched this week, featuring “Gladiator II” and “Moana 2” on its screens. “Kraven the Hunter” is set to premiere next week. The grand opening event was held on Wednesday night, with Muvi Cinemas CEO Adon Quinn and Imax CEO Rich Gelfond serving as hosts.

They participated in a question-and-answer session with Black Light CEO Talal Al Anazi, which was facilitated by actress and producer Fatimah Al Banawi. Quinn from Muvi Cinemas expressed that “Ambulance” being the first Saudi film to be digitally remastered for Imax viewing is an excellent decision, and they eagerly anticipate Ibrahim Al Hajjaj, Mohammed Al Qahtani, and director Colin Teague bringing the movie to life on Imax screens.

The movie theater opening also takes place as Imax aims to expand its presence in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East region. This event aligns with the commencement of the fourth Red Sea Film Festival in Jeddah, which seeks to highlight the burgeoning film industry not just in Saudi Arabia, but across the Middle East and beyond.

With the launch of our inaugural location alongside Muvi Cinemas, Saudi Arabia’s largest exhibitor and a fresh strategic ally for Imax, we are thrilled to broaden our horizons into Arabic content and offer Arabic-speaking spectators an enhanced variety of entertainment,” Gelfond stated.

In 2024, Imax expanded its collection of content from around the globe, particularly from rapidly developing film industries, by showcasing an impressive 61 movies in various local languages,” he pointed out.
