In A Surprise Movie, Denis Villeneuve Has A Dune 3 Update I Honestly Didn't Think Would Be Coming Anytime Soon

As a long-time fan of the Dune saga, I must say that Denis Villeneuve‘s latest comments about Dune 3 have sent a rush of excitement coursing through my veins! Having grown up with the original Frank Herbert books and being utterly captivated by the breathtaking visuals and masterful storytelling in both Part One and Two, I can’t help but feel like this is the culmination of a lifelong dream.

Given the impressive box office earnings and rave reviews for both “Dune: Part One” and “Dune: Part Two,” it’s not entirely unexpected that we’ll be seeing a third “Dune” film. Director Denis Villeneuve had hinted at this possibility long before the official announcement. However, he also suggested that a third “Dune” movie might take some time. Recently, his remarks about “Dune 3” are a bit surprising, as he now claims the script is being written and he’s actively working on its completion.

Earlier, Denis Villeneuve hinted at his enthusiasm for making a third Dune film, which would be adapted from the second novel, Dune: Messiah. However, he expressed interest in exploring other projects for the time being and returning to the world of Arrakis later on. However, during an interview with Variety at the Toronto International Film Festival, Villeneuve disclosed that a script for Dune 3 is currently being developed and he will be departing TIFF shortly to focus on it. In other words, work on the third Dune film is now underway according to Villeneuve’s recent statements.

It’s in the works, yeah. That’s why I’m not staying here [at TIFF] very long.

As a gamer, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Dune 3 might just be Denis Villeneuve’s next move. If he were busy with something else, like his announced Cleopatra project, then the current script work on Dune wouldn’t be as pressing.

Absolutely, “Dune: Part Two” has generated over $700 million at the worldwide box office, making it the fourth highest-grossing film of the year globally. Figures like these certainly motivate Warner Bros. to persuade Denis Villeneuve to start work on another “Dune” movie as soon as possible.

For some time now, director Denis Villeneuve has expressed a possible desire to create a third Dune movie. Since Frank Herbert’s book, Dune: Messiah, concludes the story of Paul Atreides, it could be an intriguing project as it would complete a satisfying trilogy for the director. However, Villeneuve himself has also mentioned that making such a film might not be essential. Herbert wrote this book partially in response to Dune readers who he felt didn’t understand the main message of the first book: that Paul Atreides is not meant to be an ideal hero, a point which Villeneuve believes he successfully conveyed in his films.

Even though Denis Villeneuve had expressed his intention to spend ample time on a third Dune movie, indications suggest that he might not have as much leeway as expected. Warner Bros.’ release schedule, unveiled in June, included a “Denis Villeneuve Event Film” slated for December 2026. It’s been speculated that the film could be Dune: Messiah, and if the script is so vital that the co-writer and director need to revisit it promptly, it might be because he aims to bring that script to the big screen in less than two years.
