Instead of releasing “Insidious 6” (still without an official title) in August 2025 as initially planned, Sony Pictures Releasing has decided to postpone it by a whole year. Now, the latest installment in the popular horror franchise created by James Wan and Leigh Whannell will be released on August 21, 2026. According to Deadline, Sony executives are replacing “Insidious 6” with “Caught Stealing,” a crime thriller directed by Darren Aronofsky, based on Charlie Huston’s book of the same name. The film stars Austin Butler, Zoë Kravitz, Matt Smith, Regina King, Liev Schreiber, Bad Bunny, and Vincent D’Onofrio, among others.

Interesting Twist: The dark comedy, initially planned in 2013 and featuring Patrick Wilson as the lead, has been stuck in development limbo, much like how Insidious 6 remains enshrouded in mystery. Despite Sony Pictures’ decision to keep the sixth installment of Insidious on their schedule (Screen Gems will distribute it), there is no clarity regarding the project’s status. It continues to be in pre-production, with only producers confirmed – a group that may include Jason Blum, Oren Peli, and others. At present, there are no writers, directors, or cast members attached to Insidious 6.
Today, when news about the postponement of “Insidious 6” broke, it turned out to be an unfortunate coincidence as the franchise was heavily featured in media, though not for one of its movies. Instead, “Insidious: The Further You Fear,” a live immersive horror show based on the franchise, was garnering attention across the country. However, after only a few performances, the reception was so poor that the show was abruptly shut down. Although it’s not necessarily indicative of Sony Pictures reshuffling their schedule, this sequence of events does raise some eyebrows.
A Horror Franchise That Refuses to End
Despite delays in movie releases and cancellations of immersive events, it’s far from certain that the Insidious series is winding down. In fact, the latest installment, Insidious: The Red Door, released in 2023, demonstrates that there’s still plenty of potential left in this franchise. Directed by franchise star Patrick Wilson in his directorial debut, this film effectively builds upon the original themes and continues the story of the Lambert family, which had been left hanging since Insidious: Chapter 2.
Following “Insidious: Chapter 2,” the series persisted with prequels that continued to rake in significant box office earnings, underscoring the worth of Leigh Whannell’s screenplays (he penned every installment except for “The Red Door”). This is why the “Insidious” franchise remains resilient. To date, all the films have amassed over $730 million in revenue from a total production budget under $50 million. It’s one of Blumhouse Productions’ key and profitable intellectual properties, and it’s certain that more will be produced after “Insidious 6” hits theaters in 2026.
