What Is Prime Video’s ‘Invincible’ About?

Robert Kirkman developed the adult-animated TV series “Invincible” for Prime Video, which premiered in 2021. This show is based on Kirkman’s comic book series from Image Comics. Essentially, “Invincible” is a story about Mark Grayson, a teenage character who has the challenging task of growing up while dealing with the immense shadow cast by his father, Nolan Grayson, also known as Omni-Man – Earth’s most powerful superhero. However, Mark’s perception of his dad might change over time.

At age 17, Mark acquires extraordinary abilities that Nolan assists him in controlling. Over time, Mark becomes proficient with these powers, transforming into a superhero known as Invincible, sporting a yellow suit adorned with blue shoulders and black accents. As Mark grapples with his dual roles – upholding his superhero duties while maintaining a normal adolescent lifestyle, in line with his father’s legacy – the main drama unfolds when Mark uncovers Nolan’s hidden identity.

Mark discovers that his father is secretly an alien from a powerful species on a planet called Viltrum, hailing from the Viltrum Empire. After losing his parents at a young age, Nolan joined this empire with the goal of increasing its control across galaxies. As Mark unearths his father’s hidden intentions and questionable actions, things take an unexpected turn. Towards the end of the first season, there is a shocking battle between father and son that leaves both physically and emotionally scarred, causing a significant transformation in Mark for the remainder of Season 2.

Mark’s Increased Strength in ‘Invincible’ Season 3, Explained

At age 17, Mark acquires extraordinary abilities, such as superhuman strength, agility, resilience, and the ability to fly. However, these powers have a negative impact on his mental health. For example, his flying skills may become disoriented at specific frequencies, leading to bewilderment and loss of balance. Furthermore, he experiences fits of berserker-like rage due to his Viltrumite genetics, which he finds challenging to control as he matures.

As Mark’s newly acquired abilities grow stronger, he encounters a formidable obstacle towards the end of Season 2: his longtime adversary, Angstrom Levy (portrayed by Sterling K. Brown), seizes Mark’s mother and sibling as hostages. Furthermore, another character called Anissa, a Viltrumite, emerges and demands that Mark unify Earth with the Viltrum Empire to establish a single, homogeneous race.

Mark refuses and is nearly beaten to death by Anissa, who spares him for the time being. Mark is often overpowered thus far throughout the series, especially against other Viltrumite opponents. Therefore, he requires a significant superpower upgrade to defeat his foes moving forward in Season 3. As stated in Invincible‘s Season 3 trailer:

For the past three months, Mark’s speed, endurance, and strength have shown significant improvements. Specifically, his speed has grown by 65%, his endurance by 70%, and his strength by an impressive 138%.

Mark’s rapid improvement in speed and stamina is nothing to underestimate, but his 138% surge in strength might just grant Invincible the heroic power needed to hold his own against other Viltrumites. Mark’s power growth is so significant that Rex Splode (Jason Mantzoukas) quips, “That’s quite a way to make a superhero feel inferior. I’m just glad it’s not leg day,” as he observes Mark lifting weights in the gym.

A short while later, Mark is questioned with, “Fancy giving those freshly developed muscles of yours a workout?“, initiating a fresh challenge for Season 3. Additionally, sharp-eyed viewers spotted another significant alteration in Mark’s appearance in the trailer, linking directly to Kirkman’s comics.

How Mark’s New Suit Honors the ‘Invincible’ Comics

In the closing shots of the Invincible Season 3 trailer, we see Mark adorning a complete blue superhero outfit – a decision that reflects the original comic series by Robert Kirkman and plays a crucial role in his transformation into a superhero.
