Warning: This discussion contains spoilers for the first two seasons of ‘Invincible’. If you haven’t watched them yet, you can stream both seasons on Amazon Prime.
Season 3 of the invincible series is set to air on TV schedules in 2025, which means our beloved fatherly superhero-turned-supervillain-turned…possibly good guy? J.K. Simmons‘ character, Omni-Man, certainly has a complicated past, but he seems ready for it!
The Amazon Prime original series based on the comics by Robert Kirkman, known for its blend of action-adventure and family drama, has traditionally featured Omni-Man, a character straddling both genres, who took a less prominent role in Season 2. In an interview with TopMob before the release of Season 3, Simmons, the actor portraying Omni-Man, expressed contentment with his reduced screen time – as the series is titled “Invincible” rather than “Omni-Man” – but he was eager to display and lend voice to an unexplored facet of Omni-Man that we haven’t witnessed before. In his own words:
Sure thing! Since the series is titled Invincible, it makes sense for me to step back occasionally. However, it was quite enjoyable to have more responsibilities in Season 3. Moreover, delving into different facets of this character provides an opportunity to add depth and complexity, which keeps things interesting and prevents the role from becoming monotonous over time.
What sets Invincible apart as an exceptional superhero series – indeed, one of the finest non-Marvel/DC superhero shows – is its deep examination of the complex personalities of the characters and the unexpected events that unfold in each installment. This very quality is what makes Omni-Man stand out. Robert Kirkman, the creator, has often highlighted that it’s the transformations undergone by the characters over time that he appreciates most about long-form storytelling.
It seems we’ll keep delving into captivating narratives filled with unexpected plot twists and character developments that remain consistent with their existing personalities. For me, this is what makes long-form storytelling exciting, be it live-action or animation.
Throughout the franchise, Omni-Man has stood out as a significant character. It’s true that many fans admire Mark as a hero, and seeing him gain immense strength is always satisfying, particularly following Angstrom Levy’s brutal demise in Season 2 finale. However, a crucial aspect of our appreciation for him also comes from witnessing his transformation into a more ferocious being to confront his father and the entire Viltrumite race.
Initially, it was uncertain what would become of Omni-Man after he was apprehended by the Viltrumites during Season 2 on Thraxa. It seemed as though his narrative was nearing its conclusion. However, in this space prison, we’ve already observed him expressing longing for his wife last season, and in Season 3, he appears to be growing concerned about Alvin the Alien, his cellmate.
This isn’t the identical Omni-Man from Season 1, and even though I haven’t delved into the comics (to avoid spoilers), I’m eagerly anticipating what unfolds as Season 3 continues and beyond. Will we possibly witness a clash between Omni-Man and his kin once Alvin manages to reach him? I can hardly wait to find out!
The invincible series remains one of the top-notch programs on Amazon Prime, and it promises to become even more impressive. Don’t forget to catch up with the first three episodes right away, then return weekly to Amazon Prime to follow through on the rest of this exhilarating, action-packed narrative.
