Invincible returns once more! This animated series, inspired by the Image Comics comic book with the same title, centers around the complex bond between Mark Grayson, a teenage superhero, and his father Nolan Grayson, known as Omni-Man. The show has been a massive success and is expected to grow even larger. The initial three episodes of Season 3 were released on Amazon Prime Video on February 6th, with the following four episodes set to premiere every Thursday until March 6th.
At the moment, it’s an intriguing question: Which character, Omni-Man or Homelander from ‘The Boys’, would come out on top if they ever clashed? Given their shared ruthless nature, they might find common ground, but if a confrontation were to occur – a scenario increasingly likely in today’s TV world that thrives on crossovers – one of them would undoubtedly face a formidable challenge.
Homelander Is an Impressive Superman Knock-off, But He Has a Few Weaknesses
Homelander shares many similarities with Superman; he can fly, move swiftly, lift immense objects, endure fatal impacts or explosions, hear distant sounds, and emit laser beams. Contrastingly, Superman possesses X-ray vision that doesn’t work on lead, whereas Homelander is equipped with UV vision, making it difficult for him to see through materials containing zinc (which includes sunscreen, as it contains zinc for this very purpose).
In the series “The Boys,” Jonah Vogelbaum and Stormfront both portray Homelander as the most powerful individual on Earth. It’s said that he once fractured a woman’s spine as a child by giving her a hug. However, his strength seems to falter when he’s in flight. In Season 1’s episode “The Female of the Species,” he confesses that he can’t fly the hijacked plane to safety, suggesting that he needs a firm surface to fully utilize his superhuman strength.
Despite excelling in individual combat, Season 3’s “Herogasm” demonstrated that he could be outmatched if his adversaries team up. In his fight with Butcher and Soldier Boy, he managed to hold his ground, but upon Hughie’s arrival, the situation began to turn against him, compelling him to withdraw.
Regarding his resilience, it’s been observed that Homelander has withstood the destruction of a powerplant without injury, and emerged unharmed from the detonation of the Stillwell residence. Stillwell attested that no Earthly weapon can harm him. However, there is potential for causing him harm if someone exerts sufficient effort. His battle with Butcher and Soldier Boy resulted in a facial bruise, while Queen Marve managed to draw blood by inserting a metal rod into his ear drum.
Homelander possesses some impressive abilities beyond his primary strength. It’s been noted by Stillwell that he is faster than a typical F-16 fighter jet, which can reach speeds of approximately 1,500 mph or Mach 2. In Season 2’s “Proper Preparation and Planning,” we discover that as a child, he was capable of breaking the sound barrier. Additionally, Homelander can survive without oxygen and has been observed admiring New York from space. His auditory senses are exceptional, with an estimated range of nearly 200,000Hz, allowing him to detect details such as Hughie’s blood pressure being 150/90.
Omni-Man’s Viltrumite Physiology Makes Him Indestructible
Omni-Man exhibits many of Superman’s powers, but seems significantly stronger. In the climactic moments of the opening episode, he ruthlessly eliminates every member of the Guardians of the Globe, despite them sharing similar Viltrumite Physiology as him. Furthermore, it is said that Viltrumites possess the extraordinary ability to shatter planets, a feat that we question if any user of Compound V could achieve.
Concerning his incredible speed, it’s been suggested that Omni-Man can travel faster than light itself. This extraordinary ability enables him to traverse interstellar areas in mere days. What’s more, his swift pace generated powerful winds capable of leveling entire cities. To add to this, he managed to keep pace with Red Rush, the swiftest member of the Guardians of the Globe.
Apart from this, Omni-Man’s cells remain evergreen. He has maintained his powers and youthful appearance even after living for countless centuries. A period of time spent in the Flaxan Dimension didn’t affect him; he emerged unchanged compared to when he went in. His eyesight is also flawless. In terms of weaknesses, Omni-Man can contract the Scourge Virus, similar to other Viltrumites, and can be weakened by intense high-frequency sounds. However, these are relatively minor drawbacks, and based on what we’ve observed so far, it seems fair to say that he is more powerful than most.
Omni-Man Would Beat Homelander In a Direct Fight, But Strength Might Not Be the Key Factor
The extraordinary powers possessed by Omni-Man and Homelander suggest they can basically accomplish anything they wish. Yet, in a genuine fight to the finish, it’s not just strength that matters. In fact, Homelander exhibits significant emotional and psychological vulnerabilities. His repeated demands for affection reveal these weaknesses, as he becomes easily provoked by small acts of defiance and shows an unforgiving temperament. Furthermore, his low self-confidence makes him susceptible to manipulation.
Considering his traditional views on masculinity, Omni-Man is likely to pierce The Seven’s leader’s polished exterior and reveal the sensitive, vulnerable individual hidden within. Any harsh remarks from Omni-Man during their battle could rattle him. Moreover, Homelander’s arrogance might lead him to underestimate Omni-Man in a fight, providing an opportunity for our character from Invincible to strike when he least anticipates it.
To put it simply, Homelander hasn’t encountered any substantial challenges so far. He’s more of a schoolyard bully, switching between tormenting the weak and relaxing in Vought’s offices. On the other hand, most Vultronites are seasoned warriors, while the only significant fight Homelander had was with Butcher, Soldier Boy, and himself. In that confrontation, he showed signs of retreat. Therefore, when faced with a formidable opponent like Omni-Man, it’s reasonable to expect him to either retreat again or suffer defeat.
In a conversation hosted by Skybound for ‘Invincible versus the World’, Robert Kirkman stated that Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the executive producers of ‘The Boys’, concurred with his viewpoint that Omni-Man would triumph over Homelander in a hypothetical fight.
I’ve had conversations with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg regarding this topic, and they agree that Omni-Man is stronger than Homelander. In a hypothetical fight between the two, it’s likely that Omni-Man would emerge victorious. However, it remains uncertain how Invincible would fare against Omni-Man. Initially in the series Invincible, he might struggle against Homelander due to Homelander’s broader Superman-like abilities, even though his raw strength may be less compared to Omni-Man.
The battle must take place. Nothing could be more intriguing – and pivotal for the genre – than this violent clash. It will be challenging to observe (particularly for those sensitive to violence), but substantial rewards are in store for those with strong constitutions. However, it’s tricky because The Boys is nearing its conclusion, and there’s no certainty that Homelander will make it through the final season. For The Boys to achieve a definitive victory, Homelander should perish. On the other hand, whispers of an Invincible live-action movie are circulating, and possibly multiple spinoffs of Billy Butcher’s series may materialize. Consequently, the probability of an intersection remains significant.
