Following its debut at the Sundance Film Festival, Ira Sachs‘ most recent production, titled “Peter Hujar’s Day“, has been acquired by specialty distributors Sideshow and Janus Films for distribution across North America.
The upcoming screening at the Berlin Film Festival, titled “Peter Hujar’s Day“, is a verbatim adaptation of a 1974 conversation between photographer Peter Hujar and writer Linda Rosenkrantz. In this dialogue, Hujar shares details about his past day, which was filled with activities such as photographing Allen Ginsberg for The New York Times and discussing his connections within the ’70s New York art scene. Ben Whishaw portrays Hujar in the film, while Rebecca Hall takes on the role of Rosenkrantz.
According to The Hollywood Reporter’s review, the movie is considered one of Sachs’ finest works. Critic David Rooney praised it, stating that “Ben Whishaw delivers a captivating, nuanced performance in the lead role.” He further added that the film skillfully compresses time into a flowing, expansive, enlightening, and emotionally impactful piece, all achieved with elegant subtlety.
Jordan Drake and Jonah Disend were responsible for creating the movie, while WME Independent handled the negotiations for the film’s creators in the deal.
Previously, Sideshow and Janus have collaborated on distributing numerous hit films from festivals, such as the Academy Award-winning “Drive My Car” and this year’s Golden Globe winner for Best Animated Feature “Flow”, which has earned them the most revenue so far. Coming soon is David Cronenberg’s new film titled “The Shrouds“.
