In a challenging phase for Iron Galaxy Studios, renowned for creating both original games and porting popular titles, a tough decision has been made: letting go of 66 employees. The team behind Killer Instinct and Rumbleverse finds itself at a critical juncture in its history due to the ongoing upheavals in the gaming industry, including studio shutdowns and redundancies. This move, unfortunately, is their last resort to ensure the studio’s survival.
In a recent update on their website, Iron Galaxy, founded in 2008, acknowledged the difficult decision they’ve had to make due to ongoing economic challenges. They emphasized that this move is essential for maintaining stability in the long run. Known for creating distinctive titles and collaborating on large-scale projects, Iron Galaxy has been instrumental in co-developing and remastering games such as Overwatch, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, and Metroid Prime Remastered.
Recently, the studio’s new game, Rumbleverse – a wrestling-themed battle royale – was closed down only six months after its launch in 2022. This was a hard hit for the company as they had high hopes that this game would improve their position. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts to fix things, the studio acknowledged that they had reached their limit, meaning they couldn’t make necessary changes to keep everyone employed.
In an effort to secure its long-term viability, Iron Galaxy Studios recently downsized their team by approximately two-thirds, affecting both developers and support personnel. This decision comes amid a broader trend in the gaming world, where we’ve seen significant redundancies and even the shutting down of prominent studios over recent years.
At Iron Galaxy, redundancies are occurring as part of a larger trend impacting significant corporations such as Ubisoft, BioWare, and Piranha Games too.
