In the upcoming “Captain America: Brave New World,” Giancarlo Esposito, known for his ruthless characters in shows like “Breaking Bad,” “The Mandalorian,” and “The Boys,” will offer a new form of adversary. Unlike his usual behind-the-scenes role as a puppet master, Seth Voelker, or Sidewinder as he’s also known, seems to be an active player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, hinting that Esposito may not make a brief appearance in this universe.
Last autumn, Giancarlo Esposito was interviewed by New York’s ABC affiliate about his role in “Captain America: Brave New World” during LA Comic Con. The subsequent reports indicate that his debut as Sidewinder won’t be a one-time appearance. During the interview, the actor was asked to compare his character’s appearance with its comic book counterpart, who sports a red and purple suit and has a large orange neck frill. Esposito hinted at possible future changes in the character’s style. In other words, it seems that we can expect Sidewinder to undergo some modifications in his appearance in the upcoming series.
I’ve included some of Sidewinder’s vibrant hues in the outfit I’m currently wearing, hoping it will spark creativity for future films where I can further embody this snake-like character. You haven’t seen me portray a role quite like this before – my character is well-versed in handling firearms, from rifles to pistols, and is proficient in close combat with knives. He’s a physically active individual who isn’t shy about using his fists or feet for combat.
In terms of style, the image at the start of this article makes it clear what’s intended. To put it simply, the distinctive orange neck frill worn by the Marvel Comics antagonist has been adapted by the costume designers into something more realistic: a brown jacket collar.
Instead, let’s zero in on “movies to come” in the response. We aren’t privy to much about Sidewinder’s role in Captain America: Brave New World‘s grand narrative, but this excerpt hints that he will have lingering matters to address when the final act concludes. It could be that the Serpent Society, a team he commands, might play a pivotal part in forthcoming Marvel Cinatic Universe films, potentially leading up to the monumental projects slated for Phase 6: Avengers: Doomsday (set for May 2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (due in May 2027).
It’s just as likely that Giancarlo Esposito is merely playing coy with us, should his remarks about being in future Marvel Cinematic Universe films be true. This seemingly harmless talk makes us feel more at ease while watching Captain America: Brave New World, making Sidewinder seem “safe”. However, if it’s revealed that his character meets an untimely end in the film, his words will have added a significant element of surprise to the storyline.
The final chapter of the character’s story is nearly here! Featuring Anthony Mackie, Harrison Ford, Tim Blake Nelson, Danny Ramirez, Carl Lumbly, Shira Haas, and Giancarlo Esposito, the fourth “Captain America” movie will grace screens nationwide on Valentine’s Day, 2025.
