Is James Gunn’s DCU Making the Same Mistakes as the DCEU?

As a film critic who’s seen more than a few superhero movies in my time, I can say that James Gunn’s DCU is shaping up to be quite the spectacle. With his knack for breathing new life into obscure comic book characters, I have high hopes for this universe. However, it seems we’re diving headfirst into a sea of upcoming titles, and while I appreciate the confidence, I can’t help but feel a tad overwhelmed.

As a movie enthusiast, I’ve been yearning for a fresh take on the superhero genre, following the epic conclusion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Avengers: Endgame. Don’t get me wrong, Feige, your work has always been exceptional, but it just doesn’t spark the same level of excitement anymore. I understand the need to rebuild and establish credible characters, but a decade-long buildup hasn’t quite captured the same frenzy as before. The last six years have seen no groundbreaking theatrical releases that leave fans in awe. Perhaps Doomsday or Secret Wars will shift the narrative, but for now, I find myself drawn to James Gunn’s DCU.

As a movie enthusiast, I’ve got to say, James Gunn’s latest project promises a fresh ensemble of characters that deserve a comeback on the silver screen. If you remember, it was his genius that brought us the Guardians of the Galaxy, characters who were once unfamiliar faces in the comic book world, but are now beloved by many. Gunn has this extraordinary talent for breathing life into obscure comic book personas and turning them into the talk of the town. So, let’s give these new characters a chance, shall we?

As the days progress, an increasing number of titles are being added to the list that was already revealed in phase one of the Gods and Monsters project. Now, let’s delve into the core issue here. Mr. Gunn, I kindly urge you to proceed with caution to avoid repeating the blunders of the previous DCEU. Let’s take a moment for Superman before moving on.

New DCU Titles Just Keep On Coming

In addition to “Creature Commandos,” approximately ten live-action projects are in development. These range from well-known characters like Superman and Batman, to lesser-known characters such as The Authority, Swamp Thing, and Booster Gold. Since the announcement on January 31, 2023, there have been occasional mentions of other DC movies that weren’t part of the initial lineup.

A treatment for a Deathstroke and Bane team-up film. A release date for a movie revolving around Batman villain Clayface. The writer for the upcoming Supergirl penning a live-action Teen Titans script and Daniel Craig & Luca Guadagnino once again teaming up for DC Studio’s Sgt. Rock. I just feel like it’s way too much at this time. Sure, the opening slate was a great display of confidence toward your long-term revitalization plan for big-screen DC. The rundown and synopsis of each production made fans feel enthusiastic once again.

As a movie enthusiast, it’s always exciting to see new titles emerging, but I can’t help but reminisce about the once-promising DC Extended Universe (DCEU) and its extensive lineup of movies that were initially announced. Sadly, many of these projects, such as “Batman Beyond,” “Cyborg,” “Justice League Dark,” “New Gods” (which I was particularly looking forward to), “Nightwing,” and even “The Wonder Twins,” never quite made it to the big screen. It seems that there’s talk now about director James Gunn abandoning several projects, though their identities remain a secret—a wise choice, if you ask me.

The effects of unrestrained ambition are becoming apparent. Adding more beloved comic book characters to Superman might appease fans, but should we really be expanding the roster when our current plan is still being established? It’s important to solidify the base first, then make progress. Superman hits theaters on July 11, 2025.
