In M. Night Shyamalan‘s 2024 film, titled “Trap”, there was an unusual twist from his typical plot structure of surprise endings. Unlike his other movies where the true villain is unveiled at the climax, in this movie, it was relatively straightforward to deduce that Josh Hartnett’s character, Cooper, was the antagonist. Cooper, a firefighter from Philadelphia, is taking his daughter to a popular singer’s concert when they learn that the police suspect a serial killer might be present at the event that night.
In the trailers, it was clear that Hartnett’s character, Cooper, was the suspect the police were pursuing. However, the movie takes an unexpected twist at the end when Cooper abducts the pop star during a concert and manages to evade the police, which seems a bit too convenient. The ending of the film, titled “Trap”, suggests that Cooper was arrested by the police, but the final scene implies that he won’t stay in custody for long, making it seem like Cooper is nearly untouchable. This ending is reminiscent of the “Unbreakable” series.
Trap Theory Indicates Cooper Has Powers Like David Dunn & The Beast
Cooper Seemed Almost Unstoppable
Following the film’s premiere, a dedicated fan put forth an intriguing theory on Reddit. User liltomh suggested that the character Cooper from “Trap” bears a striking resemblance to a recurring character in the shared universe of films by M. Night Shyamalan.
Despite being drugged and receiving at least three taser shots, he managed to overpower one of the SWAT team members. It took around four or five tasers before they could finally subdue him, but just moments later, when he broke free once more, he seemed completely unharmed! The drugs appeared to have no impact on him at all. Quite a formidable individual, if you ask me.
Absolutely, “The Beast” is the primary antagonist in both the films, Split and Glass. In Split, Kevin Wendell Crumb exhibited various personalities, one of which was the Beast. This personality granted him extraordinary abilities and a remarkable resilience to pain. In Trap, Cooper experiences drug-induced hallucinations after being drugged by his ex-wife. Subsequently, he is tasered repeatedly by SWAT team members. At a critical juncture during this ordeal, he momentarily imagined his mother praising him for revealing uncommon emotions before the police apprehended him.
Despite being subjected to drugs and electric shocks, he managed to stay conscious enough to grab a bike spoke as the police escorted him out. He even smiled, suggesting he was on the verge of breaking free and making his escape. In this Reddit post, users compared the shirtless scene to Crumb in the movie Split, with many expressing similar thoughts. Another user pointed out the kidnapping footage displaying his extraordinary strength, while yet another noted his tendency towards multiple personalities, reminiscent of a split personality.
Glass Left The Door Open For A Sequel In World Of Unbreakable
Glass Reveals That There Have Always Been Super-Powered People
In the film “Glass”, we learn that individuals with extraordinary abilities were traumatized as children, which aligns with the backstory of characters like David Dunn, Elijah Price, and Kevin Wendell Crumb from both “Split” and “Glass”. This pattern is further suggested in the movie “Trap” with character Cooper. The conclusion of “Glass” appears to wrap up the franchise as every powered character meets their demise, including David, Elijah, and Kevin. However, a surprising twist occurs at the end.
After everyone involved had passed away, Dr. Ellie Staple, played by Sarah Paulson, thought she’d effectively hidden all proof of people with extraordinary abilities, a task her organization had carried for thousands of years. However, Elijah managed to outsmart her by broadcasting the footage prior to her erasure attempt. The recording was then received by Mrs. Price (Elijah’s mother), Casey (the original victim from Split), and Joseph (David’s son). As a result, these individuals became known worldwide due to their subsequent public disclosure.
In a possible twist, Cooper might be the next powerful character within M. Night Shyamalan’s interconnected universe, despite all the deaths portrayed. When Shyamalan directed the film “Split”, he didn’t explicitly suggest The Beast belonged to the “Unbreakable” universe. Instead, he saved the connection for a post-credits scene. Although there is no post-credit scene in the movie “Trap” that directly links to “Unbreakable” or “Glass”, the escape sequence leaves room for Shyamalan to potentially develop the franchise further along those lines.
