As a film enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the magic of Disney movies, I must admit that I am both intrigued and disheartened by the performance of Mufasa: The Lion King at the box office. Having grown up with the original 1994 animated classic, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia for the timeless story and characters that defined my childhood.
The underwhelming reception of this prequel seems to be yet another example of the growing resentment audiences have towards Disney’s attempts at remaking or reimagining their classic animated films. It’s as if we, as fans, are saying, “Hakuna Matata, but please leave our beloved stories alone!”
Now, I’m not saying that every attempt should be a box office smash like the original Lion King, but it does make me wonder what the future holds for some of my other favorite Disney films. Take Snow White, for instance – with all the controversy surrounding its live-action reimagining, I can’t help but worry that this timeless tale might not live up to our expectations.
On a lighter note, let’s hope that the upcoming live-action version of Snow White doesn’t suffer from the same fate as Mufasa: The Lion King and instead manages to captivate audiences in a way that only Disney can. After all, as long as we don’t have to endure a “Seven Dwarfs” prequel, I think we’ll be alright!
2024 has proven to be a record-breaking year for me, as a movie enthusiast, with Disney breaking new ground by reaching over $5 billion at the global box office. This incredible feat was achieved through a trifecta of blockbuster hits – the action-packed duo of Deadpool and Wolverine, the emotional journey of Inside Out 2, and the enchanting tale of Moana 2.
The cherry on top was Disney’s latest release, Mufasa: The Lion King – a visually stunning prequel to the timeless 1994 animated classic, which was reimagined in 2019. This photorealistic animated masterpiece has been instrumental in helping Disney reach this impressive milestone.
Despite underwhelming critical appraisals and debuting simultaneously with Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the release of Mufasa: The Lion King was overshadowed at the domestic box office during its opening weekend by the staggering earnings of $60 million from Sonic the Hedgehog 3. In comparison, Mufasa: The Lion King only managed to gross $35.4 million.
The Lion King,” shifting its expected outcome from a financial catastrophe for Disney to merely a moderate box-office letdown.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I was eagerly anticipating the global premiere of “Mufasa: The Lion King.” However, despite high expectations, the domestic opening weekend fell short, raking in just $50 million – a stark contrast to the astounding $191.7 million that the original 2019 version managed domestically. To add to this disappointment, “Mufasa: The Lion King” only grossed an underwhelming $90.2 million overseas, bringing its worldwide debut to a comparatively low $125.6 million. This is significantly lower than the projected $180 million global earnings, leaving me and fellow cinephiles eagerly awaiting a more successful performance in the future.
Instead of that, let me rephrase it for you: Unlike other movies, The Lion King made a staggering worldwide debut of $446 million in 2019. It went on to earn a domestic gross of $543.6 million and a grand total of over $1.6 billion globally. Until September 2024, The Lion King held the title as the highest-grossing animated film ever, until Inside Out 2 surpassed it. In its theatrical run, The Lion King raked in almost $600 million in net profit, making it one of the most financially successful films from the last decade.
To break even in its theatrical run, Mufasa: The Lion King needs to earn between 600 million and 650 million dollars globally at the box office, considering its estimated marketing cost of around $100 million and production cost of $200 million. This is similar to what happened with Wonka, which initially had a mediocre domestic opening of approximately 39 million dollars during the holiday season but went on to gross nearly 220 million dollars domestically and over 630 million dollars worldwide.
‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ Clawed Back Against ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ Over Christmas
Following a dominant opening weekend in the U.S., “Mufasa: The Lion King” surpassed “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” on Christmas Day, earning an impressive $13 million contrasted with $10.4 million for “Sonic the Hedgehog 3”. Even more notably, “Mufasa: The Lion King” held onto its top position a day after Christmas, outperforming “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” by approximately $12 million to $11.5 million.
The surge in popularity for “Mufasa: The Lion King” can be attributed to the enduring charm of the “The Lion King” series, robust ticket sales before release, and positive word-of-mouth buzz. Despite mixed reviews from critics, the movie currently boasts a promising 88% rating among audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
It appears that “The Lion King (Mufasa)” is showing remarkable staying power at the box office. In its second domestic weekend, it pulled in around $37 million, which was slightly more than its initial weekend earnings. Over a five-day period starting from Christmas Day, it grossed almost $64 million, contrasting with approximately $60 million for “Sonic the Hedgehog 3”.
The Box-Office Performance of ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ Doesn’t Bode Well for ‘Snow White’
Similar to numerous Disney productions from the last five years, the debut of Mufasa: The Lion King was met with a wave of unfavorable publicity before its release. The initial trailer for Mufasa: The Lion King ignited audience backlash due to the heavy use of CGI, while loyal fans of the Lion King franchise have also expressed disapproval over the changes made to the franchise’s canon by rewriting the origins of characters Mufasa and Scar in Mufasa: The Lion King.
The poor performance at the movie theater for the film “Mufasa: The Lion King,” in contrast to the massive success of “The Lion King” from 2019, underscores the growing discontent among audiences towards prequels and remakes of Disney’s beloved animated films. This sentiment was also evident in the less-than-stellar box office earnings for the live-action versions of “Dumbo,” “The Little Mermaid,” and “Mulan.
The lackluster reception to the movie “Mufasa: The Lion King” could be a concerning sign for the upcoming live-action adaptation of Disney’s 1937 animated film “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” titled simply “Snow White.” Notably, “Snow White” has been surrounded by ongoing controversy, such as when its lead actress, Rachel Zegler, caused a stir among audiences by criticizing the over 77 million people who voted for Donald Trump in the 2024 Presidential election.
