Although Paul Reiser is widely recognized for his comedic roles such as in “Mad About You” and other ventures, he boasts an impressive genre pedigree too, spanning from “Aliens” to “The Boys”. Currently, Reiser’s science fiction credentials are most notable through his portrayal of Dr. Sam Owens on “Stranger Things”, a role that he considers a highlight. Being part of one of Netflix’s top binge-worthy shows has been a delight for him, and his remarks have only heightened my curiosity about whether he will reappear in “Stranger Things” Season 5.

Paul Reiser Felt Welcomed On The Stranger Things Set

Towards the end of his interview on “Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum”, the podcast host read out a question from a Patreon subscriber asking about Reiser’s fondest memories while playing Dr. Owens in “Stranger Things”. The star of “Beverly Hills Cop” expressed that receiving the call to join one of the world’s most popular shows was already a memorable moment in itself. When Rosenbaum inquired if he enjoyed working on the series, Reiser responded affirmatively.

In my new role, I joined during the second series. This meant I was aware that the show had already become popular, and I had an idea of its appearance. Somewhat, I thought, ‘I’m the new student at school, wondering where to sit. They’ve all been friends, they’ve just finished their first year together.’… I wasn’t anxious, merely surprised by the warmth I encountered. The cast were genuinely kind and intelligent individuals.

In Season 2 of Stranger Things, Dr. Owens debuted as the fresh leader of Hawkins Lab. Unlike his predecessor, Dr. Martin Brenner who was portrayed as an adversary, Dr. Owens was presented in a more compassionate light. Initially, it may have seemed odd for him to join this new group, but the cast and crew ensured he wasn’t isolated. He was particularly impressed by the young actors in the production, expressing his admiration.

As a movie enthusiast, let me say they were all fantastic, indeed! Gaten [Matarazzo] was simply amazing, and Millie [Bobby Brown], well, she blossomed into an international sensation later on. To the untrained eye, one might expect her to be haughty. But no, she’s far from it. She’s genuinely sweet and intelligent. A real gem!

Despite being dismissed from the lab following the Upside Down’s invasion, Owens found himself back in Hawkins, Indiana at the conclusion of Season 3 upon Jim Hopper’s alert. In Season 4, it came to light that he had partnered with Martin Brenner on a project called the Nina Project, aimed at rejuvenating Eleven’s abilities. By the end of the season, this goal was achieved, but Owens was not in an ideal predicament.

Yet, before Owens could reveal anything, Eleven wrecked the helicopter and the vehicles Sullivan’s team had arrived with, allowing her and her companions to flee.

What’s the current situation regarding character Owens in Stranger Things Season 5? While I understand that major plot points need to remain a secret, it would be great to know if Paul Reiser will reprise his role for the grand finale. Given the significance of Owens, I assume he hasn’t been written off permanently and his storyline will be explored further. My speculation is that his character has been imprisoned on charges of treason, but he’ll likely return to Hawkins to assist in handling the town being invaded by Upside Down creatures.

I’m eagerly anticipating whether Paul Reiser will join Stranger Things in Season 5 before its release in 2025. If it turns out he won’t be revealed until the episodes, that’s alright too. In either case, I might as well rewatch the first four seasons with my Netflix subscription to keep myself entertained while waiting.
