Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage” – America’s Favorite Comedy on Network Television
It’s no surprise that this comedy series tops the charts, given the golden touch of “The Big Bang Theory.” The show has been renewed for a second season, guaranteeing another year filled with laughter from the Cooper family. With its parent shows having had long runs, it’s expected that this program will continue to entertain audiences for years to come.
Ever since Georgie, Mandy, and Mandy’s parents appeared on “Young Sheldon,” the spin-off has bypassed a lot of essential background information. However, it was important for viewers to get to know the new characters. They managed that quite well with Connor, Mandy’s brother, who appears to be the show’s equivalent of Sheldon. Unfortunately, the other new character, Ruben, is yet to be fully fleshed out and developed.
1. In the tire shop, our character works alongside Georgie and Jim, yet finds himself envious of the special attention that boss Jim showers on his new hire and son-in-law. However, beyond this professional rivalry, he remains a rather simple figure. What does his life entail outside of work? How was his bond with Jim prior to Georgie’s arrival? We don’t need an intricate backstory or deep-seated issues; but as a key player, we should delve deeper into his personality.
Or, if you prefer a more conversational tone:
2. At the tire shop, he’s the coworker of Georgie and Jim, feeling a tad green-eyed over the extra attention that boss Jim gives to their new employee and son-in-law. But beyond that, there isn’t much else we know about him personally. What does his life look like outside of work? How was his relationship with Jim before Georgie came along? We don’t need a dramatic past or emotional baggage; but since he’s an important character, it would be nice to understand him better.
The Main Cast of ‘Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage’
The show titled “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage” primarily revolves around the main characters, Montana Jordan portraying Georgie and Emily Osment as Mandy, along with their immediate family members. This includes Mandy’s parents, played by Will Sasso and Rachel Bay Jones, her brother Connor (Dougie Baldwin), and their infant daughter Cece. The narrative primarily focuses on the family, with occasional scenes in town or at a well-known Young Sheldon setting. However, most of the storylines unfold within the McAllister family home or tire shop.
Instead of having a large number of recurring characters, focusing the story on a tight-knit family in one main setting can still be an effective storytelling method. However, this also implies that there are very few characters who make regular appearances. While we do see Mandy’s colleagues and actors from Young Sheldon in some episodes, the limited cast requires careful character development to ensure they are as well-rounded as possible.
As a devoted admirer, allow me to introduce Ruben, Jessie Prez, Georgie’s tire shop colleague who was previously Jim’s sole employee before Georgie joined the team. However, it’s no secret that Ruben isn’t exactly overjoyed about this new addition to our work family. You see, Jim, being Georgie’s father-in-law and the grandfather of my precious little girl, has bestowed a certain level of authority upon Georgie, which doesn’t sit too well with Ruben.
Ruben’s role in the stories largely involves teasing or deceiving Georgie, flattering Jim, and frequently expressing dissatisfaction with the recent work environment. However, his character lacks significant depth at this stage. Given that we are roughly halfway through the first season, there is still room for development. Nevertheless, one might expect a series introducing its main characters to have them more fully developed by now. This leads me to wonder why it’s not the case here.
How to Develop Ruben in ‘Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage’
Prior to Georgie joining, it appears Ruben and Jim were the only employees at the tire shop. Given that Ruben is jealous of the new hire, who is also the boss’s son-in-law, it’s reasonable to infer that they had a close working relationship beforehand. However, the show offers potential for exploring their dynamic in more depth.
In this instance, Jim selects Georgie instead of Ruben to join him at the yearly “tire convention” – a disguise for a gambling excursion. While Ruben may jest about it, how does he truly feel when a 19-year-old takes his place? On a deeper level, he might harbor resentment and miss the camaraderie he once shared with the boss. Of course, it’s a sitcom, so we won’t delve into emotional turmoil, but shouldn’t there be an additional layer to the story?
In addition to never observing Ruben anywhere except the tire shop, it’s intriguing to ponder what kind of activities he enjoys when not working on cars. Perhaps an episode could be devised where the McAllisters extend an invitation to him for dinner to help ease the strife between him and Georgie. This scenario might offer insights into his post-work lifestyle and shed light on how he perceives being overshadowed by Georgie. It’s also worth considering if Ruben has any friends or relatives who stand by him. Shows like “Parks and Recreation” effectively manage this balance, as they portrayed the character Jerry/Garry/Larry/Terry as often mistreated and underappreciated at work but presented a harmonious and loving home life with his family, providing a contrast to his professional struggles.
Perhaps Ruben also possesses similar traits. At present, we don’t have much to cheer for him since he’s merely the sarcastic colleague. Fleshing out his backstory and showing his connections with loved ones might make him more identifiable and appealing as a character. As of now, you could easily eliminate him from the storyline, and Georgie & Mandy would hardly be affected. However, this isn’t what you’d want for a main character. Here’s hoping Ruben’s character development continues throughout this season and beyond on Paramount+. Stream Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage on Paramount+.
