The six-episode series “Zero Day,” starring Robert De Niro, has become a significant success on Netflix, surpassing “American Murder: Gabby Petito” in numerous markets and attracting 19.1 million views. However, as co-creator Noah Oppenheim stated, the show told a complete story and was initially conceived as a one-season production. Despite receiving unfavorable reviews from both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, a successful show is still a success, and the producers along with De Niro are now hinting at the possibility of a second season.
During a recent interview, creators Oppenheim, De Niro, Eric Newman, and Mike Schmidt mentioned that although the political thriller was initially conceived as a standalone project, discussions about potential continuations have taken place.
We believe we’ve shared a comprehensive account of events so far. To clarify, it’s a close-knit group of individuals who have had an incredible journey together. As for Eric, Mike, and myself, we frequently discuss potential future developments. Specifically, what might transpire with Alexandra Mullen, and what could occur with Speaker Dreyer the following day? However, at this point, there’s no formal plan in motion.
As a follower, I understand that the streaming numbers of this show must consistently surpass its Rotten Tomatoes scores – both critical (54%) and audience (55%). In his MovieWeb review, Matt Mahler suggests that viewers might need to push through the “terrible” initial episode, which is centered around the dramatic event known as “Zero Hour,” where communication systems nationwide are disrupted. However, he assures us that if we do persevere, the show does indeed improve.
‘Zero Day’ Season 2 May Depend on How It Does Over the Next Few Weeks
Zero Day”, which premiered on February 20, 2025, is a relatively new show, so it might be too soon for discussions about a second season or Netflix approval. On the other hand, “The Penguin” was initially designed as a one-off series tied to “The Batman”. However, due to its success in ratings and critical acclaim, conversations have arisen regarding a second season. Interestingly, Colin Farrell, who received awards for his role, isn’t pushing for it immediately. Notably, while both shows had their debuts recently, “The Penguin” has garnered more widespread love than “Zero Day”.
One reason for optimism about a potential second season is if the series continues to gain traction beyond its initial few weeks. For instance, “The Day of the Jackal” featuring Eddie Redmayne was initially intended as a standalone show on Peacock, but it turned out to be a massive ratings success. After its November 2024 premiere, discussions for a second season ensued due to the growing audience. Currently, it is Peacock’s most-watched original drama series. Similar to “The Penguin,” it has received positive reviews from both critics and audiences, with an 85% and 75% rating respectively. Positive word of mouth helped fuel its growth.
Regarding Zero Day, De Niro conveyed hope for another season and shared some thoughts on what it could encompass, even though the initial conclusion tied up the narrative.
It’s uncertain if this situation involving the character will carry on, but it might just be an intriguing sequel to our current events. Given Eric, Noah, and Mike, they have the potential to create something exceptional, which we can all agree on. However, there are numerous paths this could take, and things are moving quickly. It’s possible, not impossible.
Zero Day is now streaming on Netflix.
