Living in today’s era of endless streaming has a unique advantage – classic favorites from movies and TV series are constantly being rediscovered by new generations. For those who cherish these works, it offers an opportunity to reminisce about what initially drew them in, as well as finding new fans with whom to share their passion for the content. In some instances, this renewed interest can even lead to the growth of established franchises, as networks recognize the revitalized fandom on streaming platforms. This is exactly what happened with the upcoming spin-off titled “Suits: LA“.
Prior to the announcement of this show, the original “Suits” had already concluded after nine seasons. By 2019, it appeared that its popularity had reached its peak. Yet, by 2023, the series found a new home on Netflix and Hulu, and it became an unprecedented sensation. This renewed success surpassed even the show’s original run, amassing over 26 billion viewing minutes and setting numerous records. This sparked the announcement of “Suits: LA,” which has been eagerly awaited by fans since then. However, with its debut on February 23, 2025, the series premiere faces a significant challenge due to the high expectations set by its predecessor. Here’s why it’s under pressure.
Can Harvey Specter Ever Be Replaced?
Read Our Review
By March 2024, Canadian actor Stephen Amell had already been chosen to star in “Suits: LA”. Exciting news for fans of the original series, it was subsequently announced that Gabriel Macht, famously known as the captivating Harvey Specter from the original show, would be making guest appearances. However, this development raised concerns among fans of the original series. This is due to the fact that, for those who watched and admired the original series, it becomes apparent that Harvey is not only its leading star but also its primary attraction, usually serving as the central focus.
In this series, Harvey wasn’t the only significant character, far from it. He had strong partnerships with Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams) and Donna Paulsen (Sarah Rafferty), and Meghan Markle’s character became quite prominent as well. There were many other compelling characters too. Yet, none of them could capture the screen presence that Harvey did.
What Made Harvey So Electric in ‘Suits’?
He possessed an appealing appearance, charm, and sharp intellect, and he seamlessly transitioned between wearing a three-piece suit and boxing gloves. He could effortlessly win over everyone, from colleagues to clients. Yet, it wasn’t these qualities that truly mattered—it was the unique blend of these traits that created his distinctive radiance, making him stand out as the lead figure, regardless of who or what the story centered on. The fact that Mike and Rachel departed the series late only served to emphasize Harvey’s influence even more.
The significance of this question lies in the fact that numerous Suits enthusiasts find it hard to envision a Suits universe without Harvey. We’ve already established this fact. Initially, Pearson, the first spin-off of Suits, appeared to be a logical move. Given that Jessica Pearson (Gina Torres) served as a mentor figure for Harvey, it seemed reasonable. However, when she starred in her own series, it became clear that fans weren’t as captivated by it as they were by the weekly world where Harvey was present.
As a dedicated cinephile, I find myself faced with a substantial challenge regarding the protagonist of Suits LA, Ted Black. He’s not just any character; he’s the cornerstone of this new production. In essence, he steps into the role once held by Harvey Specter in the original series, which implies a sharp, engaging personality, dramatic depth, and quick-witted dialogue. However, despite these promising elements, the show might still struggle to live up to its potential, as we’ve seen with Pearson. The challenge for Ted is even steeper due to the inevitable comparisons he will face in light of his male lead status and the iconic role played by Harvey Specter before him.
Perhaps ‘Suits: LA’ Simply Needs Its Own Identity
Many people believe that Harvey Specter is almost impossible to replace, as there’s no other character quite like him, and Gabriel Macht portrayed him in an unparalleled manner. To give you an idea, at the height of his popularity, Macht became so emblematic among his legions of fans – men and women alike – that his name frequently surfaced when discussions about casting for characters such as James Bond and even Batman arose (even though Stephen Amell has indeed played a DC hero).
The prestige associated with the types of roles Harvey Specter played indicates just how well-respected he became as a TV character. This might lead one to think that Ted Black and Suits: LA are destined to falter. However, after watching its first episode, there’s another perspective to consider. In fact, Suits: LA could achieve iconic status by forging its own unique identity.
It Seems to Be a Mixed Bag
Based on our observations, it seems achievable. As reported by FandomWire, Ted Black possesses distinctive qualities of his own.
Ted Black isn’t exactly my favorite character, but his storyline manages to stir up feelings of support. The writing deserves praise, and Amell, with his exceptional performance on the Starz series Heels, brought a bit of that charming wrestling acting into the role of Black. Amell is an exceptionally talented actor who doesn’t receive enough recognition for the depth he adds to his performances.
Initially, it appears that Amell and Suits: LA might benefit from not attempting to replicate Harvey or the original Suits. The pilot episode introduced some captivating plot twists towards the end, suggesting that several characters aren’t exactly who they seem – a characteristic that sets it apart from its predecessor. However, the show has had a less than impressive beginning. Only time will reveal if Ted Black and Suits: LA can measure up to Harvey Specter and the original Suits. Suits: LA is now available for streaming on Peacock.
