As a long-time fan of the Cyberpunk universe, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation when it comes to the sequel. The first game was a rollercoaster ride, with the hype reaching unprecedented heights only for the game to disappoint many upon release. However, the developers at CD Projekt Red have shown resilience and determination in fixing their masterpiece, culminating in the recent release of Phantom Liberty.
Back in 2020, I was incredibly hyped for the launch of Cyberpunk 2077. However, my excitement quickly turned sour when CD Projekt Red unveiled a game riddled with bugs and far from completion.
For a few years now, CDPR has been working diligently to improve the game, and they’ve made significant strides with the recent DLC called “Phantom Liberty.” Their focus is now shifting towards the upcoming sequel, where they might introduce an element they couldn’t include in the first game—multiplayer functionality.
Multiplayer in the Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel?
Though CD Projekt Red is being secretive about Project Orion (the working title for the Cyberpunk sequel), there are speculations that a multiplayer feature may be introduced in this installment. Game Rant has suggested that job postings from CDPR hint at the inclusion of multiplayer, which could serve as strong evidence to fans that it will indeed be included.
In 2019, developers openly incorporated multiplayer features into their game, as evidenced by this job posting they shared:
Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, they weren’t able to fully integrate it into the game following its rocky debut. Post the turbulent release, the developers dedicated countless hours to rectifying the game, guaranteeing smooth performance across all supported platforms and minimizing glitches wherever possible.
The result ended up in the multiplayer being thrown on the back burner.
It’s What Everyone Wants
Regardless of the original Cyberpunk lacking a multiplayer mode, its structure leaves ample opportunity for its integration. To start, the vast expanse of Night City provides plenty of space for multiple players to explore and interact within the game.
Moreover, the overall structure of the game shares the same criminal genre as Grand Theft Auto, but with a twist – it’s set in the future. Given that GTA Online paved the way for an online multiplayer crime game, CDPR could easily refine this formula slightly to create something fresh and distinctive within their own universe of urban outlaws.
Mods to the Rescue
Although Cyberpunk 2077’s sequel details are still secret, gamers have been brainstorming means to create a multiplayer version of the game. In fact, there’s talk about a mod being developed that could eventually bring players together in one shared space where they can engage as their characters. Here’s a sneak peek at its functionality:
The details about collaborative mission-sharing in the game are still unclear, however, this feature seems essential for realizing CDPR’s initial vision for the game, which unfortunately, they were unable to fully implement.
It appears that the team is focusing on the upcoming Witcher game first, so fans may have to wait some time for news regarding the next Cyberpunk title. Let’s hope they successfully deliver the product when it’s launched.
The release date for the Cyberpunk sequel hasn’t been set yet, but the refined version of Cyberpunk 2077, titled Phantom Liberty, has already been launched on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
