Is ‘The Suicide Squad’ Canon in the New DC Universe? James Gunn Finally Answers!

With James Gunn and Peter Safran now jointly leading DC Studios, there’s a bit of uncertainty among fans about which stories are still considered part of the DC Universe. The films that were part of the DCEU under Zack Snyder’s guidance have been reclassified. However, The Suicide Squad, directed by James Gunn, has been in a sort of limbo regarding its status within the DC Extended Universe since he took charge of the DCU. Fortunately, Gunn has tried to clarify things for puzzled fans online, though not entirely so.

In simpler terms, James Gunn stated on Bluesky that as of now, the Creature Commandos series moving forward is considered canonical in the new DC Universe, which was introduced in December 2024 with the release of the first official project. However, his additional clarification seemed to only add to the confusion.

Rick Flag Jr met his end due to information we learned from Creature Commandos (where Rick Flag Sr spoke about it), rather than anything we witnessed in The Suicide Squad.

The Creature Commandos are considered part of the official DC Universe storyline. While Season 1 of Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad aren’t officially part of this storyline, their stories align with it, except for scenes involving the Justice League. In other words, the stories in these shows are generally consistent with what we know about the DC Universe, but they don’t necessarily add to the official storyline.

James Gunn Teases His Next DCU Project

Short answer: Only Creature Commandos forward is pure canon. For instance, Rick Flag Jr was killed because we heard Rick Flag Sr talking about it in Creature Commandos, not because we saw it in The Suicide Squad. (1/2)

Despite his busy schedule managing the entire DC Universe, directing post-production for Superman, filming Season 2 of Peacemaker, and working secretly on a new DCU project, James Gunn still manages to engage with fans online. It’s unclear what this next project entails as Gunn has kept it under wraps. Fans are speculating if it’s one of the upcoming movies in the ‘Gods & Monsters’ phase or an entirely new, unrevealed project. On Twitter, Gunn has hinted at his next work, sparking curiosity among fans.

Mostly, I’m engrossed in post-production work for both Superman and Peacemaker, yet I also dedicate a significant portion of my time to drafting concepts for my upcoming DC Studios project, reviewing daily footage, and sharing suggestions for other projects. It feels significantly less stressful compared to when I was directing.

In July 2025, the upcoming DC Universe project featuring Superman is set to hit theaters. David Corenswet plays the title role as the Man of Steel, accompanied by Rachel Brosnahan portraying Lois Lane. The initial trailer, unveiled at the end of 2024, offered fans a sneak peek into DCU’s first feature film and introduced various DC Comics characters who will be making their silver screen debut in this movie.
