Is Twisters Going To Make Money At The Box Office? Why A Nearly $350 Million Intake Isn't As Clear Cut As It Seems

As a seasoned gamer and film enthusiast who’s seen his fair share of blockbusters, I must confess that the success of movies like Twisters is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it’s thrilling to witness such an entertaining spectacle that captivates audiences worldwide. However, upon closer inspection, it’s clear that these behemoth productions often struggle to turn a profit due to the labyrinthine nature of film finance.

At first glance, the movie Twisters appears incredibly profitable, earning a staggering $80.5 million in its opening weekend and consistently drawing a substantial audience since then. It has ignited numerous viral videos featuring the film’s cast, and its appeal spans across various demographics, underscoring its widespread popularity. However, despite seeming like it’s raking in money for Universal Pictures, this isn’t entirely accurate when considering the real costs involved.

A significant number of complex monetary manipulations are involved in determining the final box office earnings of a movie, with numerous concealed expenses that often prevent blockbusters like Twisters from actually turning a profit, even though it might seem otherwise due to various reasons.

As a gamer putting on my producer hat, I’ve learned that the budget for creating a cinematic experience like Twisters clocks in at an impressive $155 million. While that number might give you sticker shock, it’s starting to align with the norm for today’s blockbusters. However, the expenses don’t stop there. In fact, the promotional and marketing costs (P&L) for a film of this scale can often be almost twice the production budget itself.

The projected earnings for Twisters are said to reach $100 million, which might even be an underestimate. This implies that the film needs to generate an initial $255 million to cover costs, a significant milestone considering it’s a sequel to a movie nearly 30 years old. It’s also worth mentioning that not all revenue earned by a movie ends up in the studio’s profit.

Approximately half of a movie’s ticket sales are kept by the cinemas showing it. This means that Twisters needs to earn approximately $500 million just to cover its costs, and even more than that to turn a profit. Fortunately, Twisters has already made $244 million domestically, which is impressive and surpasses expectations. Since this film is so large in scale, studios anticipate doubling their profits overseas, which would have nearly brought Twisters to profitability even before its release for home viewing.

Regrettably, “Twisters” didn’t achieve the success it aimed for in global markets. The film has only managed to earn $95.1 million from international sales so far, which equates to approximately 28% of its total box office revenue at around $339.2 million. Given that movies of this scale heavily rely on appealing to a wide range of international audiences, it’s crucial to focus on themes that resonate universally and avoid any cultural alienation.

Movies such as “Avatar,” “Avengers: Endgame,” and “Titanic,” which are among the highest-earning films of all time, often excel in this regard, sometimes even outperforming their domestic US box office earnings in foreign markets. Conversely, “Twister” is distinctly American, with its storylines and characters rooted in the American south, possibly accounting for its lesser success in Asian and European cinemas.

Despite not yet turning a profit, Twisters continues to hold its ground at the box office, finishing fourth last week behind Alien: Romulus, Deadpool & Wolverine, and It Ends With Us. In the past, a film not recouping its production costs through box office sales was less concerning. A significant portion of a movie’s profits could be earned when it was released for home viewing on DVD or Video On Demand.

As a movie enthusiast, I’ve noticed that the landscape has shifted significantly with the advent of streaming platforms. It seems that a film’s profitability post-theatrical release has become less straightforward, and the distribution of backend pay has been less transparent. Nevertheless, classics like Twisters, a critically acclaimed blockbuster, continue to be a delightful experience at the cinema. Here’s hoping it manages to recoup its costs and inspire studios to produce more entertaining summer flicks akin to this one in the future.

The movie Twisters is still showing in theaters, so don’t miss your chance to watch it on the largest screen available. If you prefer to see it at home, you can either buy or rent it now on Amazon.
