Is Wiccan More Powerful Than Wanda?

As a film enthusiast with a deep-rooted passion for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I find myself intrigued by the latest developments in Disney+’s Agatha All Along. The revelation that “Teen” is actually Billy Maximoff, Wanda’s reincarnated son and future Wiccan, has certainly added a new layer to the series.

The fifth installment, titled “Darkest Hour/Wake Thy Power,” of the Disney+ series Agatha All Along ended with quite a suspenseful moment. It was unveiled that the character we’d previously known as “Teen” is actually Billy Maximoff. Recognized in the comics as Wiccan, he is believed to be the reborn son of Wanda Maximoff, aka Scarlet Witch, and Vision. However, Billy himself was uncertain about this revelation. He found himself at age 13 with no recollection of his past, be it as Billy Maximoff or William Kaplan, the son of Jeff (Paul Adelstein) and Rebecca Kaplan (Maria Dizzia). But it was then that he discovered he possessed magical abilities, and in Episode 5, he employed them against Agatha.

In the expansive Marvel Universe, Wanda Maximoff, known as the mother of Wiccan, boasts a deeper history and thus, there is more evidence of her formidable powers. Initially presented as an adversary to the Avengers, she later proved herself to be a valuable member, demonstrating that she could harness her abilities with equal prowess as any other hero. This was clearly demonstrated in ‘WandaVision’, where she employed her sorcery to raise Vision from the dead, summoned a pregnancy resulting in their twin sons, and maintained control over the entire town of Westview, New Jersey, along with all its inhabitants. However, the question arises: who holds greater power – Wiccan or his mother, Wanda? Let’s delve into that.

What We Know About Wiccan

In Episode 6 of Agatha All Along titled “Familiar by Thy Side,” there’s a brief glimpse into Billy Maximoff’s background. Three years ago, both Billy and his brother Tommy vanished when Wanda lifted the hex in Westview. Simultaneously, the car carrying William Kaplan met with an accident, resulting in William’s death. Interestingly, Billy’s spirit or essence transferred into William Kaplan’s body following this incident. This is essentially everything we’ve learned about Billy from the series so far. As we delve into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s worth noting that Billy Maximoff is a fresh character here. To fill in some gaps, we’ve turned to the comics for additional details on his backstory.

As a fervent admirer of comic-book lore, I found myself captivated by the character known as Billy Kaplan, who dons the cape as Wiccan in his alternate universe. Joining the Young Avengers, Billy uncovers an astonishing truth: he and Tommy Shepherd, a fellow team member and speedster extraordinaire, are none other than the reincarnations of Wanda Maximoff’s and Vision’s lost twins. Akin to the narrative unfolding in WandaVision, a magical force enables Wanda to conceive these unique offspring. Yet, their lives with Vision and Wanda were tragically cut short by the malevolent Mephisto, who reabsorbed them due to their origins rooted in his essence. However, Wanda’s enchanting powers allowed the twins to break free from Mephisto’s grasp, and they were reborn into new families.

The situation has been arranged for Billy to join the Young Avengers team in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, alongside previously introduced characters Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), Cassie Lang (Kathryn Newton), America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani). Additionally, there is a possibility that Billy may encounter Tommy at the end of the Witches’ Path in the series Agatha All Along.

Wiccan vs. Wanda: Who Comes Out on Top?

In the world of comics, it appears that Wiccan surpasses Wanda in terms of power. This is because Wiccan can manipulate chaos magic, which resembles Wanda’s abilities, but he also possesses additional powers that are still growing as he matures. Notably, in the future, Wiccan is expected to take over from Doctor Strange as the Sorcerer Supreme, and in Young Avengers Volume 2, Issue 9, we discover that Wiccan will eventually transform into a being with god-like powers capable of redefining the rules of magic. While these events are yet to unfold in his current existence, it’s reasonable to conclude that, in the comic book universe, Wiccan is more powerful than Wanda.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Wanda appears to be more potent than Billy at present. While Billy does possess a great deal of magical potential, he’s currently unable to consistently utilize his powers. He demonstrated this power by breaking Agatha’s spell and confronting her in Episode 5, but failed to summon his abilities again in Episode 6. It seems that for him to wield his powers effectively, there needs to be an emotional trigger present. At this stage, Billy is not fully developed into the superhero character known as Wiccan.

In contrast to others, Wanda or Scarlet Witch demonstrates no limitations when it comes to using her powers, regardless of the situation. For instance, in the series ‘WandaVision’, she cast a spell over an entire town, Westview. Moreover, in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’, under the control of the Darkhold, she was capable of defeating numerous individuals with her magic, even fellow superheroes and magical beings like herself. Even Doctor Strange couldn’t counteract her actions. Instead, she seemingly destroyed a temple upon herself, though no body was shown. This evidence suggests that Wanda’s power in the Marvel Cinematic Universe surpasses that of Wiccan at this moment, but the future remains uncertain. Don’t forget to watch Agatha All Along on Disney+.
