The much-anticipated third season of “Yellowjackets” debuted on Paramount+, in collaboration with Showtime, releasing the initial two episodes labeled “It Girl” and “Dislocation.” After a prolonged gap of almost two years, viewers can now witness the aftermath of the climactic event in Season 2’s finale, and explore how it shapes the adult characters moving forward. Despite much anticipation, the question remains: Was the long wait for “Yellowjackets” Season 3 justified?
According to Megan McLachlan from The Contending, Yellowjackets Season 3 offers more solutions, fewer original cast members, but introduces fresh interactions that make for an engaging start. Notably missing is Juliette Lewis, yet the arrival of stars like Academy Award-winner Hilary Swank and Joel McHale adds a compelling new energy to the series.
Carly Lane from Collider notes: “Yellowjackets Season 3 unfurls a puzzling plot that takes a moment or two to fully engage and rekindle interest in both storylines once more.” This is typical of the series, given its characteristic rhythm where there are peaks and valleys. It’s exactly at these moments when you feel it might be losing some appeal, something captivating occurs that serves as a reminder of why we initially became hooked on it.
Bianca Piazza from MovieWeb points out that the third season of Yellowjackets features stunning surrealistic scenes, thought-provoking philosophical conversations, and exceptional acting, notably by Sophie Nélisse portraying young Shauna and Steven Krueger as Coach Ben. Additionally, she poses a question.
Could delving into karmic consequences, the intricacies of justice and self-sacrifice, along with a touch of queer representation help maintain the appeal of Yellowjackets in its third season? Perhaps this blend will keep both ‘the Wilderness’ and its viewers content.
‘Yellowjackets’ Season 3 Is Not Without Its Criticism
This Valentine’s Day isn’t as sweet for Yellowjackets Season 3, unfortunately. At the moment, its Rotten Tomatoes rating stands at 88%, which is lower compared to the 94% of Season 2 and the perfect 100% of Season 1. Just like any show, it has its critics, with Nick Schager from The Daily Beast describing it as “a gory mess – in a very negative sense,” further stating:
The current episodes of this series are still plagued with issues, as they seem to be spinning their tales endlessly without making progress. Not only do they get stuck in the metaphorical mud but they also appear to sink deeper into it. Currently, it’s a tiresome spectacle where both storylines lack direction and meaning. It’s surprising that a show lacking suspense, clarity, or a sense of purpose is still being produced.
Among the current reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, Schager’s is the lone critic offering a negative opinion. Generally, critics and fans alike are ecstatic about Yellowjackets Season 3, especially since it seems to be living up to their expectations. If the series can maintain its positive reception, generate buzz, keep its audience engaged, and attract new viewers, creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson’s five-season plan for Yellowjackets could come to fruition successfully.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t contain my excitement! The initial pair of episodes from the third season of Yellowjackets are now streaming live on Paramount+ with Showtime. These first two episodes will also air on Showtime’s linear channel this coming Sunday for those who prefer traditional TV viewing. The rest of the series, consisting of eight more episodes, will be released weekly thereafter.
