The animated adaptation of everyone’s favorite web-slinger, Spider-Man from Your Neighborhood, has now graced our screens on Disney+, leaving viewers pondering whether it shares connections with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Unlike in the 1990s and early 2000s when animated series were distinctly separate from live-action productions, fans back then wouldn’t expect any ties. However, in 2012, we saw a shift with Ultimate Spider-Man on Disney XD, which launched two months before the release of The Amazing Spider-Man movie, both offering different perspectives on the iconic superhero.

Despite presenting material reminiscent of Tom Holland’s live-action Spider-Man films, “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” showcases differences that don’t conform to the continuity. So, is this animated series linked to the MCU? Is it a standalone production? Or does it tie into the larger Multiverse Saga? The answer might lie somewhere in between these options.

‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’ Mirrors the MCU but Is Not a Prequel

Initially announced as “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” in November 2021, it appeared to be a more straightforward MCU prequel series titled “Spider-Man: Freshman Year,” hinting at this premise. However, by the following year, it seemed that it wouldn’t follow as a direct prequel but rather explore an alternate “What If…?” scenario. Instead of Tony Stark being recruited by Norman Osborn, Peter Parker was to be the chosen one in this concept. This implied that the events leading up to “Captain America: Civil War” would remain unchanged, with Norman Osborn’s presence in Parker’s home serving as the pivotal moment deviating from the established timeline.

It appears that in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the characters Norman Osborn, his son Harry Osborn, and OsCorp don’t exist as depicted in previous Spider-Man movies, such as Willem Dafoe’s portrayal of Green Goblin from 2002. This is evident in Spider-Man: Far From Home, where these characters are nowhere to be found. Conversely, the version of Spider-Man we know as Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man includes Norman and Harry Osborn, a detail that is not present in the MCU’s timeline. This suggests that there are significant differences between this reality and the one portrayed in the MCU that go beyond what fans initially anticipated.

In the initial moments of episode 1, it becomes clear that this isn’t your typical Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) storyline; instead, it presents a completely different universe altogether. In this narrative, Peter Parker acquires his powers following an encounter between Doctor Strange and Venom – two characters who were not part of Peter’s MCU origin tale. This suggests the introduction of a radioactive spider from another dimension during their battle. The spider bite, in this version, occurs in late 2015, which is earlier than the timeline of his MCU debut.

In other words, the movie “Captain America: Civil War” suggests that Spiderman had his powers for approximately six months prior to Iron Man recruiting him in spring 2016. This implies he was bitten by the spider during winter 2015. It’s also worth noting that Doctor Strange experienced a car crash in February 2016, which means his hypothetical battle with Venom didn’t occur, making their shared universe not an exact match with the MCU. However, “Spider-Man: Home Coming” exists within its own distinct timeline, but it shares many similarities with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In many ways, despite its differences from the regular Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) series, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is carefully crafted to evoke the character portrayed by Tom Holland. For instance, the apartment shared by Peter Parker and Aunt May is identical to the one seen in Captain America: Civil War. Additionally, the design of Aunt May closely resembles that of actress Marisa Tomei, who played the role in the MCU. The final scene of each episode even mirrors Peter Parker’s first appearance in Captain America: Civil War, but with a new twist – Norman Osborn takes Tony Stark’s place. Some elements that were originally intended to make this series more directly connected to the MCU are still present.

The key insights could lie in the details about Peter Parker’s life prior to his transformation into Spider-Man, which might be relevant to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In this context, the significant clue is that Uncle Ben, who has not been portrayed or directly mentioned in the MCU Spider-Man films, perished before Peter Parker obtained his powers. Another crucial hint is that Peter Parker’s childhood neighbor, Pearl Pangan, who assumes the superhero identity of Wave in the comics, attends a different high school from Midtown High, which was destroyed early in the series. This may imply that within the MCU’s timeline, Pearl Pangan exists and attends a separate high school from Peter Parker.

It’s important to note that Jeff Trammell, the showrunner and executive producer, stated in the Phase Hero YouTube channel that events referenced by Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man may not apply directly to Tom Holland’s character version, as this series is essentially its own origin story. However, it does offer an intriguing peek into characters potentially existing within the MCU Timeline, though they haven’t been depicted yet.

‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’ Might Tie Into Marvel’s Multiverse Plans

In a different timeline within the expansive Marvel Universe, known as the Marvel Multiverse, Spider-Man: No Way Home isn’t part of the Sacred Timeline seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but it does fall under the umbrella of events during the Multiverse Saga. The first episode hints at potential connections to the broader MCU narrative due to the actions of Doctor Strange and Venom.

It seems that although Benedict Cumberbatch won’t play Doctor Strange in Avengers: Doomsday, he will reappear in Avengers: Secret Wars. The conclusion of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness shows Doctor Strange and Clea venturing to the Dark Dimension to halt an incursion, leading some fans to surmise that he has been absent, busy protecting and saving the Multiverse from various perils. This could imply that the version of Doctor Strange portrayed in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man might be the actual Sacred Timeline Doctor Strange of the MCU, even though Benedict Cumberbatch doesn’t provide his voice for this character.

If Doctor Strange confronts Venom in a future movie, it could indicate that Sony’s abandoned Spider-Man Shared Universe may now be linked to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’. Although ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ was promoted as wrapping up Venom’s tale, the end credits scene suggested that some of the Venom symbiote remains alive.

Apart from that, both “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” and “Venom: The Last Dance” introduce the concept of the symbiote hive mind being capable of cross-universe communication. It’s suggested that Knull the King and Black’s prison are not just other planets but dimensions that exist beyond our universe. These incursions could potentially have affected Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, serving as a subtle nod to the fact that the series was terminated before “Kraven the Hunter” was released. The destruction of this universe leads to the Venom symbiote attacking Doctor Strange, and their ensuing battle results in them landing in this new alternate reality.

In the animated series “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” Doctor Strange appears to possess the Time Stone, which was lost by the MCU version during “Avengers: Infinity War.” This could simply mean that this is a different interpretation of Doctor Strange within this specific series. Furthermore, considering the rapid developments in Sony Pictures’ standalone Spider-Man series and the lengthy animation production process, it seems unlikely that these recent changes were accounted for. Additionally, if a Disney-produced Spider-Man franchise were to acknowledge one of Sony’s entries, it would be surprising given their previous lack of interest.

This series can be appreciated on its own merits, allowing viewers to take on a role akin to The Watcher from “What If…?” as they delve into an alternate reality where Peter Parker’s journey takes an unexpected turn.
