Isiah Thomas Reveals Why He Refused to Join the Celtics Documentary

Over the last few years, there have been some amazing sports documentaries, many focusing on basketball. The newest addition to this list is “Celtics City,” a two-part series available on Max and airing in 2025. This show delves into the history of the Boston-based NBA team, featuring interviews with players who were part of the team and those they faced off against. However, basketball legend Isiah Thomas won’t be featured as he was covered extensively in “The Last Dance.

During the ’80s and early ’90s, Isiah Thomas often faced off against Larry Bird’s Celtics team. These games were known for their intense rivalry. It might seem logical that he would feature in the newly released documentary. Yet, in an interview with Sirius XM (as discussed on X), Thomas expressed reluctance to take part due to concerns about being manipulated or “set up.” He went on to clarify his reservations more openly:

After observing Jordan’s involvement in the Boston documentary and the way things unfolded with The Last Dance, I chose not to be part of it. They had deceived me once before, catching me off guard, and I didn’t want to find myself in a similar situation again. So, I opted out of participating in the documentary and decided to speak about it instead. However, I wasn’t interested in appearing on camera only to be set up again, much like how I felt during The Last Dance production.

Known endearingly as “Zeke” by supporters, this ex-point guard was the motor that propelled the Detroit Pistons teams of the ’80s and ’90s, often referred to as “The Bad Boys.” This team, which might make for a gripping TV series with a large budget, gained notoriety for their aggressive playing style, which some deemed dirty. Apart from the Celtics, they had intense rivalries with the Chicago Bulls, led by Michael Jordan, explaining why Mr. Thomas appeared in The Last Dance.

More on NBA Legends

During the ongoing disagreement between Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, Shaquille O’Neal urges them to have a conversation, ideally with a past NBA adversary.

Or,

In the midst of Michael Jordan’s dispute with Scottie Pippen, Shaquille O’Neal encourages them to chat it out, preferably with an ex-NBA foe.

Both sentences convey the idea that Shaq wants MJ and SP to talk things over, possibly with a former basketball rival for added perspective or understanding.

A crucial part of the Emmy-winning Bulls documentary focuses on their encounter with the defending champions, the Pistons, during the 1991 Eastern Conference Finals. The controversial playoff series concluded with Detroit being swept and many players departing mid-game without exchanging handshakes with their rivals. This moment was captured on film and combined with clips of Michael Jordan playing against the tough Pistons players, evoking strong emotional reactions from viewers. In fact, some fans of Jordan mistakenly blamed NBA player Isaiah Thomas after watching the documentary.

Surprisingly enough, I had a chat with Jake Rogal, one of the producers behind “The Last Dance”. Although we didn’t delve into Isiah Thomas’ displeasure over his portrayal in the series, I did ask the documentarian if he would make any changes to the 10-part production if given the chance. Remarkably, Rogal maintained that he wouldn’t alter anything about the documentary.

Regardless of people’s feelings towards Isiah Thomas and his portrayal in the 2020 documentary, as a 12-time All-Star, he has every right to express his own opinions. Furthermore, he was within his rights to decline participating in the Celtics show. However, it’s hard not to acknowledge that the production would have been improved with an interview from Thomas.

If you haven’t done so yet, take a look at both sections of “Celtics City” right away, and also catch up on “The Last Dance” if you still haven’t watched it.
