As a dedicated fan who has followed the Shtisel family through their heartwarming and complex journey, I am thrilled to hear about the upcoming spinoff, Kugel! The idea of exploring Nuchem and Libi’s lives in 1990s Antwerp, Belgium is not just intriguing, but a testament to the universality of human experiences.
The acclaimed Israeli series, Shtisel, which tells the story of an unconventional ultra-Orthodox family and gained unexpected worldwide popularity, will be receiving a continuation.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that the masterminds behind Shtisel, Abot Hameiri, are joining forces with Yes network and streamer IZZY to bring us Kugel! This new series will continue the captivating journey of Nuchem and Libi Shtisel, portrayed by the exceptional talents of Sasson Gabai and Hadas Yaron. Instead of staying within Israel, we’ll travel back in time to 1990s Antwerp, Belgium, where Nuchem will delve into his life as a jewelry dealer, and Libi will chase her dreams as a writer amidst the intricate tapestry of family, faith, and romance.
I’m absolutely thrilled to share that an eight-episode series, penned by none other than Yehonatan Indursky, co-creator of “Shtisel,” and directed by Erez Kavel, will make its grand debut on IZZY in the beginning of 2025. This captivating production is a joint effort between Abot Hameiri, its parent company Fremantle, and Menuetto Film. Fremantle has taken on the responsibility of selling this masterpiece worldwide. As a fan, I can hardly wait!
Originally produced by Indursky and Ori Elon, the show Shtisel initially aired on Yes in 2013 before gaining global recognition after being purchased by Netflix in 2018. Spanning over three seasons, it concluded in 2021. The distribution agreement between Yes and Netflix terminated in 2023, leading to its removal from the platform. However, it was sold to various networks and streaming services globally, including IZZY in Israel.
IZZY CEO and co-founder Nati Dinnar, excited about the spinoff, said we’ve been eagerly waiting for this day since getting all three seasons of Shtisel on IZZY. With millions of passionate fans of [Shtisel], we believe they will join us to enjoy Kugel, re-engage with Shtisel, and delve into more extraordinary tales spun by Israel’s storytellers.
Lisa Honig, a senior executive at Fremantle, negotiated the agreement in partnership with Jamie Lynn, an executive in charge of co-production and distribution for Europe, Middle East, and Africa, as well as Nati Dinnar, the CEO of Israel Media Group.
The production team behind Kugel consists of executive producers such as Dikla Barkai, Guy Hameiri, and Eitan Abot from Abot Hameiri; additionally, there’s a group including Hattie Burles, Olivia Sleiter, and Hilary Martin from Fremantle. The team is also joined by Jay Ruderman for Boston Rose, Dganit Atias Gigi, and Uzi Karin for YES.
