Among these, Sony’s Spider-Man universe stands out, yet it lacks the presence of actual Spider-Men. The most recent film from this universe was the controversial Madame Web movie (now streaming with a Netflix subscription), which faced both financial and critical difficulties. Actress Isabela Merced recently addressed the film’s poor reception, stating “It leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.”
Despite underperforming financially at the box office, the “Madame Web” project has developed a sort of cult following, with viewers critiquing Dakota Johnson’s performance and the unconventional ADR employed for the film’s antagonist. Interestingly, she and her fellow actors such as Sydney Sweeney have reportedly noticed the wave of memes that have flooded social media, particularly on Twitter, since the superhero film’s release in cinemas.
A significant debate arises regarding the film ‘Madame Web’, as the primary trio of young characters don their costumes for merely a brief duration and never fully utilize their powers within the film’s main storyline. Some enthusiasts yearn for their return in an upcoming superhero movie, hoping to witness them unleash their might. However, considering the film’s underperformance at the box office, such a scenario appears doubtful. During her subsequent podcast interview, Isabela Merced candidly acknowledged the letdown she felt about the movie.
While it brings me joy to have new opportunities, I can’t ignore the bittersweet feeling because of those who labored tirelessly on this project. It was likely their chance for a significant break, and I find myself thinking about them often. With so many cooks in the kitchen, even with good intentions, miscommunication can occur, making it difficult for everyone to understand the assignment.
As a gamer, I’ve got to admit, it’s been a blast seeing the endless memes about Madame Web floating around on the internet. But let me tell you, behind every joke lies a dedicated team that put in countless hours to bring this project to life. So yeah, those jokes might sting a bit knowing the effort that went into it.
Fortunately for Merced, she has another superhero venture approaching: the forthcoming DC film titled “Superman“. This time, she will embody Hawkgirl within the new DC Universe, promising a larger dose of action and superhero exploits compared to her previous role.
Currently, you can stream Madame Web on Netflix, and Superman is scheduled to be in theaters starting July 11th. For now, take a look at the upcoming movie releases in 2025.
