'It Feels Really Right': Law And Order: SVU's Kelli Giddish Opens Up About Returning With A Sweet BTS Story About Peter Scanavino

As a devoted fan of Law & Order: SVU, I can’t help but feel like a kid on Christmas morning with Kelli Giddish’s return to our beloved series! The Intelligence Bureau feels like a perfect fit for Rollins, allowing her to utilize her strengths and curiosity without veering off course. It’s as if the showrunners have been holding a masterclass in character development, crafting a role that truly honors Rollins while keeping us guessing about her future appearances.

In the fall 2024 TV lineup, “Law & Order: SVU” swiftly pleased longtime viewers yearning for Kelli Giddish by featuring her in a guest role starting from the third episode of the season. Not only was this a prelude to more appearances in Season 26, but it appears that Rollins is back at work, albeit with some caveats. Giddish shared insights on why this job now fits Rollins perfectly, as well as an adorable anecdote about Peter Scanavino, who plays the part of the other actor involved in the Rollisi relationship.

Initially, Rollins left SVU midway through Season 24, and she found contentment in her personal life by marrying Carisi. However, her professional life took an unusual turn when she decided to leave the NYPD and pursue a career as a professor at Fordham University. It didn’t take long for her to feel restless in her new role, which led her to appear on Law & Order: Organized Crime and contemplate a possible return to SVU in Season 25.

Currently, she has returned to the NYPD, serving as a sergeant within the Intelligence Bureau. Actress Kelli Giddish recently expressed her feelings about her cherished character resuming her strong suit: her role.

It seems perfectly fitting. I believe they’ve discovered a role and position for her that ignites her passion and fully utilizes her abilities. At times, she can be quite single-minded, which has led her into trouble and some intricate situations. However, in this case, her single-mindedness, determination, or curiosity will guide her through every available path. It’s almost as if the showrunners have masterfully played their hand.

Regarding Rollins’ appearance in Season 26, it seemed more like a setup for a spin-off similar to Christopher Meloni’s return, rather than a typical guest role as seen in her previous episodes. This suggests that the Intelligence Bureau might serve as a way for SVU to continue developing her character without it feeling odd that she’s not present every week. Given Rollins’ legitimate reasons for leaving the NYPD following a shooting incident, one might wonder if she has overcome those issues. I posed this question to Kelli Giddish herself, and she responded:

Currently, she enjoys a strong, reliable bond with her husband, Carisi. It’s clear that such a firm base allows one to venture out and have someone to rely on during those times. As I ponder over their relationship, I appreciate how it has benefited her and given her the freedom to explore new opportunities. This might seem odd considering they now have a family and a child, but the truth is, having a strong, supportive home life allows one to make bolder decisions. It may appear counterintuitive, but that’s the beauty of a robust relationship at home – someone who will be there to catch you when you stumble. I believe she feels this support with Carisi, which enables her to take risks and he stands by her throughout it all.

Regarding Carisi and his baby, the initial episode of Giddish’s Season 26 subtly explored their bond and household, skillfully avoiding an extended focus on Rollisi. I believe this is a promising indication of future developments. I mentioned to the actress that one point most SVU fans can agree on is the delight in seeing Carisi in fatherly roles, and she casually shared a behind-the-scenes tidbit about this:

Over the years, he’s often been our go-to person for soothing crying babies on set. When a baby gets fussy, we quickly hand them over to Peter, knowing he can calm them down easily. His talent with children is truly remarkable, and it’s fitting that this aspect of his character shines through in the show, making him seem like an engaging, wonderful father figure. [laughs]

It doesn’t automatically imply that Carisi’s scenes with Jesse and Billie Rollins were included in SVU due to Peter Scanavino’s exceptional ability to calm babies, but it’s quite charming to find out. The disclosure also prompted me to reminisce about a Season 17 episode where Rollins and Carisi were watching reality TV with baby Jesse, looking just as content as any baby has ever looked in Carisi’s arms. (You can watch the scene here if you’re interested, or revisit the whole episode with a Peacock subscription.)

It’s yet unclear when Rollins will reappear and how often Kelli Giddish will be in Season 26 of SVU, but I have a feeling that the show is off to a promising beginning. Catch what happens next with new episodes of Law & Order: SVU on Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on NBC, following Law & Order at 8 p.m. ET and Found at 10 p.m. ET. Additionally, Season 5 of Law & Order: Organized Crime is on the horizon, having been shifted from airing after SVU on NBC to streaming on Peacock.
