‘It Felt Right’: The Acolyte Season 1 Finale Director Explains Why She’s So Pleased With Where Things Leave Off With Osha And Qimir

As a gamer with over two decades of Star Wars gaming under my belt, I must say that The Acolyte has truly outdone itself with its Season 1 finale. From the moment I saw Mae embracing the Dark Side to Osha’s shocking reunion with her long-lost sister, I was hooked.

Warning: SPOILERS for The Acolyte are ahead!

In the series premiere of The Acolyte, Mae had turned towards the dark side of the Force, eliminating Jedi who had disrupted her life 16 years prior, while Osha was no longer part of the Jedi Order and working as a meknek. She was astonished to discover her sister was still alive. As Season 1 concluded for Disney+ subscribers, Amandla Stenberg’s characters were in contrasting situations: Mae had her memories erased and Osha decided to train under Qimir following the death of her previous master, Sol. Now that they were initially adversaries, their relationship is set to grow closer. Director Hanelle Culpepper shared with us why she’s content with how things unfold for these two characters.

In my conversation with Culpepper, the unique director who has worked on both the “Star Wars” and “Star Trek” series franchises, I inquired about the anticipated fan reactions to the alliance between Osha and Qimir. Rather than discussing that, she offered her thoughts on the Season 1 finale climax, expressing her insights to TopMob.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my feelings as I watch this captivating story unfold. You see, there’s an undeniable sense that she belongs in this very place, as if it was her destined path all along. What makes this journey so compelling is the underlying message that suppressing one’s true self can lead to inner turmoil, and sometimes, the best course of action is to embrace who you are and freely express your emotions.

Jason Micallef penned the Season 1 finale of “The Acolyte,” aptly titled “The Acolyte.” Hanelle Culpepper was thoroughly impressed by the plot twist he created. In her perspective, Osha’s descent into the Dark Side was inevitable following her discovery that Sol had murdered her and Mae’s mother. This act of force-choking Sol led Osha to cross a critical line. The consequence of this action was Osha causing the kyber crystal in Sol’s lightsaber to change from blue to red by bleeding it. To safeguard Mae, Osha consented to accompany Qimir so he could erase her sister’s memories, and now she will learn the Sith ways alongside him.

It’s clear for anyone who has followed the Star Wars movies sequentially that these two characters, Osha and Qimir, are headed towards a tragic storyline. This is due to the fact that Darth Plagueis, briefly introduced in this episode, will eventually train Palpatine as his last apprentice. Given the Sith’s Rule of Two, having four individuals would undeniably be too many, causing conflict. However, if The Acolyte Season 2 materializes, we can at least look forward to witnessing the dynamic between Osha and Qimir when they work together effectively, as well as more of the chemistry between Amandla Stenberg and Manny Jacinto that Hanelle Culpepper mentioned.

Later on, there’s the enigma surrounding Venestra Rwoh’s history with Qimir, as it turned out that he was once her apprentice and she thought him deceased. It appears that Venestra could have held Sol responsible for the deaths of those Jedi and the Force witches to the Jedi Council, but now she seems intent on discovering the truth about Qimir. However, it’s uncertain if Yoda will become part of her investigation or if this is just a distraction.

Keep an eye on TopMob for further updates regarding “The Acolyte”. Coming up next in the lineup of new Star Wars TV shows is “Skeleton Crew”, starring Jude Law, which will premiere on December 3 exclusively on Disney+.
