‘It Has A Couple Bullet Holes In It.’ Nathan Fillion Returned To The Scene Of One Of The Rookie’s Huge Shootouts, And Alan Tudyk Confirmed The Wild Souvenir He Took From Filming

The seventh season of “The Rookie” has been airing on the 2025 TV schedule, and things are quite intense. With psychotic ex-husbands roaming free, serial killers lurking, and a lot of relationship turmoil, it seems like the characters can’t escape their troubles. Despite viewers likely feeling pretty anxious, the cast appears to be enjoying filming Season 7. And following production’s return to the site of a major shootout, Alan Tudyk shared a funny keepsake he picked up as a memento.

Nathan Fillion took to Instagram to share that The Rookie was filming at a diner previously used in the Season 4 finale that guest-starred his Firefly co-star. The diner was where Nolan, Bailey, and Tudyk’s character were holed up before a gang shot it up in order to take back a criminal. Fillion explained that he told the Resident Alien star he was back at the diner, and after Tudyk confirmed a bullet-filled souvenir, the ABC show’s star had a pretty witty response, and I can’t stop laughing:

I recently sent a message to Alan informing him of my arrival, and he responded by saying, “Indeed, I recall that occasion distinctly. Interestingly enough, I possess one of the cakes from the counter that was hit during the shooting incident. It has a few bullet holes, but it’s currently resting on my kitchen counter in Los Angeles.” Given this information, I logically responded by saying, “It seems clear that Alan is an actor who truly embraces his roles, even off-screen.

It’s tough to decide which one I find more amusing. Is it more entertaining that Tudyk has a cake with bullet holes or that Fillion told such a terrible joke it became funny? If only Tudyk could display the bullet-ridden cake for us! This leads me to ponder if he might have other props with bullets scattered around his house.

In two captivating appearances, I had the privilege of stepping into the role of Ellroy Basso within the engaging series, The Rookie. My debut graced Season 2, and later, I returned for a memorable turn in the Season 4 finale. Despite being limited to only two episodes spanning over two seasons, my affection for The Rookie grew so profoundly that I now carry an indelible souvenir of those enriching moments spent on set.

It’s a mystery why The Rookie returned to the notorious diner. It seems unlikely that the earlier gunfight had any connection, as it may have just been a repeated filming location – something that happens often.

As I pen this critique, with five episodes already under our belts from an 18-episode season, it seems we’ll have to wait a bit longer for more developments. The content shared by Fillion appears to be old snapshots from his personal archive, making it uncertain when these behind-the-scenes glimpses were actually taken. Regardless of the timeline, Tudyk undoubtedly outshines all with his treasure trove of memorable moments on set.

Back in 2002, Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk shone brightly as the stars of the short-lived yet captivating space Western drama, Firefly. Fast forward to the 2005 feature film Serenity, and their on-screen chemistry was as electric as ever. It’s heartwarming to see that after all these years, they remain close companions who can crack jokes spontaneously, even when the situation calls for a more serious tone. With Tudyk’s character, Malcolm Reynolds’ sidekick, Jayne Cobb (Ellroy), still kicking it – or so we fans hope – perhaps we might just catch a surprise cameo from him in the not-too-distant future?

Currently, enthusiasts can only enjoy his two performances by re-watching them with a Hulu subscription. Fresh episodes of “The Rookie” are broadcast every Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET on ABC. Despite the action-packed scenes and complex relationships, there’s plenty to anticipate in the upcoming episodes.
