As a gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that Alfonso Cuaron’s latest masterpiece, “Disclaimer,” is a rollercoaster ride that transcends the boundaries of traditional storytelling. With its intricate narrative structure and stunning cinematography, it’s like playing through an immersive indie game where every twist and turn keeps you on the edge of your seat.
For six years now, Alfonso Cuaron, the talented director behind the Oscar-winning drama “Roma,” has been silent with a follow-up work. His latest project, “Disclaimer,” a seven-part series on AppleTV+, features Cate Blanchett in a powerful role as an award-winning journalist haunted by a past memory. The story unfolds when two individuals connected to her past seek revenge.
If, by some chance, you’ve managed to progress this far in the narrative without previously viewing our disclaimer, and if you have a sensitivity towards storyline details and potential spoilers, it would be advisable for you to cease reading at this point.
In the original show “Disclaimer,” we find two different accounts of a single tale unfolding. Here, Catherine, portrayed by both Cate Blanchett and Leila George, meets a youthful adventurer named Jonathan (Louis Partridge) during her trip to Italy. Despite Catherine having responsibility for her teenage son Nicholas (George and Bertie Haarer), an intimate encounter occurs between them. However, the reality of this incident leaves viewers questioning the truth.
In the film “Disclaimer“, tension escalates towards a tragic ocean rescue. An unsupervised young boy, Nicholas, ventures onto a boat in the sea. As numerous beachgoers attempt to save him, it’s Jonathan who swims out to the child. Remarkably, he rescues the boy, but unfortunately loses his own life in the ordeal. Alfonso Cuaron, the skillful director, expertly captures this emotional scene, immersing viewers deeply into the ocean as they share the exhaustion of a struggling Jonathan.
During an appearance on TopMob’s official ReelBlend podcast to delve into his latest project, Disclaimer, we inquired about the process of staging the ocean rescue scene. To our surprise, it turned out to be much more intricate than what most people would think, according to Cuaron’s explanation on ReelBlend.
Initially, everything depicted in that section originates from a book penned by Nancy, Jonathan’s mother. She wasn’t physically present during the events described. Instead, these scenes are born from her imaginative portrayal, where she idealizes her son, transforming him into a different character. Perhaps she knows the true essence of her son, but in her writing, she presents him as a romantic and heroic figure. Therefore, it was significant to confront the grief associated with losing this fictional hero.
The show, “Disclaimer,” consistently challenged our understanding of narratives and trustworthy storytellers. It frequently moved between events in Italy and the present day, affecting both Catherine (Cate Blanchett) and Jonathan’s parents (Kevin Kline and Lesley Manville). Also worth mentioning is that some recollections of the Italian incident are depicted through a romanticized lens.
However, along with everything else, there were also the technical complexities involved in the ocean rescue, which Cuaron elaborated on for us.
To film the beach sequences, we chose locations in Italy. However, safety concerns prevented us from using a five-year-old in a small boat amidst large waves for sea scenes. As a result, we needed to produce that scene in a secure setting. Consequently, we filmed that part in South Africa, inside a tank, and then integrated Italy into the environment of this tank. The project was a blend of various elements…
I find it fascinating to have filmmakers such as Alfonso Cuaron on the ReelBlend podcast. For instance, you may have watched the harrowing boat rescue scene in Disclaimer, and thought it was intense. However, did you know that the director had to relocate his production from Italy to South Africa just so they could film in a tank? This was necessary to ensure the safety of their child actor, while still maintaining the intensity of the natural light previously captured. Truly amazing!
From my perspective, I find “Disclaimer” to be one of the top-tier shows currently streaming on AppleTV+, thanks to the sheer talent it boasts. Now that you’ve had a chance to watch it, I strongly encourage you to make the most of your subscription by exploring some of the exciting upcoming projects on AppleTV+. Catch a glimpse of what lies ahead for us in 2025 and beyond!
