'It Was Just Wonderful And Really Magical': The Irrational Star Reflects On The Moment Of Instant Chemistry With Jesse L. Martin As Season 2 Begins

As a devoted fan of The Irrational, I must say that the bond between Alec and Kylie is one of my favorite aspects of this captivating series. And to learn that the first time Travina Springer, who plays Kylie, and Jesse L. Martin, who portrays Alec, met was during their very first scene together in the hospital in the pilot episode… Well, it’s just magical! It feels like they were destined to play siblings, as their chemistry is so genuine and heartwarming.

Spoilers ahead for the Season 2 premiere of The Irrational on NBC, called “Collateral Damage.”

In the 2024 TV lineup, NBC brings back “The Irrational,” and the Season 2 opener leaves a kidnapping mystery to be unraveled while also laying the groundwork for a new season. As Rose gets taken captive, Alec grapples with maintaining impartiality in “Collateral Damage,” only to end up kidnapped himself. With Kylie serving as his closest ally who can offer rational advice, he listens to her more than anyone else. During an interview about “The Irrational’s” second season, Travina Springer (who plays Kylie) shared insights on the initial scene she filmed alongside Jesse L. Martin to depict the bond between the Mercer siblings.

In the heart of the predicament concerning “Collateral Damage”, the focus was initially on saving Rose, followed by the rescue of both Alec and Rose. However, amidst these critical incidents, there were significant interactions between the Mercer siblings. Kylie subtly reminded her brother of their intimate understanding, to which he confessed his inability to maintain impartiality when it came to Rose’s peril, even though he wasn’t ready to openly declare his affection for her. Towards the episode’s end, at the hospital, they had a moment that mirrored a scene from the series debut last year.

As a devoted fan, I stumbled upon an intriguing tidbit shared by Travina Springer – that pivotal scene we watched unfold in the series premiere (available on Peacock) marked their very first encounter in real life with Jesse L. Martin! When I expressed my admiration for Kylie and Alec’s relationship as one of my favorite aspects from Season 1, the actress herself responded to my sentiment.

I truly appreciate your comment. Working alongside Jesse L. Martin is an absolute delight for me. To be honest, during our pilot shoot, there was a scene where he’s in the hospital at the end of the episode – that was our first encounter in real life. It was simply wonderful and quite magical how we clicked instantly and got along. From the very beginning, it felt like we were family, which made my job much more enjoyable.

In “The Irrational,” it was crucial to have a unique chemistry between the actors portraying Alec and Kylie, as this would allow them to genuinely convey sibling dynamics. As someone with older brothers myself, I believe the show succeeded admirably in this regard, especially with Jesse L. Martin and Travina Springer. It’s fascinating to know that their hospital scene in the pilot was actually their initial encounter off-screen. Springer added:

Working with this person is an absolute delight! The writers have done an incredible job of portraying the sibling bond in such a genuine way, it’s like they’re reading my mind. You know, when you collaborate with someone that talented, it just makes my role so much smoother. [laughs] I think it’s wonderful and significant to depict a loving brother-sister relationship, and I’m thrilled we get to bring that to life. Since I don’t have a big brother myself, I get to experience those dreams through Jesse’s character.

Absolutely, Jesse L. Martin was well-known to many longtime NBC viewers, having appeared in the highest number of episodes – a total of 202 – among the actors on “Law & Order”. Before “The Irrational”, he had other successful projects as well. Travina Springer shared her insights about his work with fans:

It’s clear to me that Jesse is widely recognized for his diverse acting career. He was a significant cast member on Law and Order for multiple seasons and is adored for his role in that series. Similarly, he gained a massive following on The Flash. However, what many people also recognize him for is his exceptional performance in the Broadway play and film adaptation of Rent – the musical. In fact, he’s considered a legend due to these roles. It’s fascinating when I meet people who know I work in the industry; they often mention him from one of his iconic projects like Law and Order, Rent, or The Flash. That’s quite intriguing!

It was around 2022 when news emerged about NBC creating a pilot for The Irrational, that Jesse L. Martin gradually distanced himself from The Flash. However, he managed to lend his voice from Rent to both The Flash and Supergirl during their musical crossover before leaving. As for the Mercer siblings, Alec and Kylie, it’s uncertain what Season 2 holds for them; however, it seems like trouble related to Alec’s tendency towards danger may be brewing.

Given that the Season 2 opening scene depicted Alec voluntarily getting abducted, it’s not hard to understand why Kylie might be concerned about her brother engaging in risky actions! In fact, last season featured a stunt so challenging for Alec that Jesse L. Martin was unable to perform it.

Catch the upcoming adventures for the Mercer siblings and others by tuning in to The Irrational every Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET on NBC, after The Voice. If you missed any previous episodes, don’t worry – you can stream them on Peacock!
