‘It Wasn’t Even That Funny At The Table Read’: Channing Tatum Tells Us The Punchline That He Can’t Believe Has Turned Into A Meme

As a gamer who grew up watching Channing Tatum‘s movies and laughing at the iconic “My Name is Jeff” scene from 22 Jump Street, it’s been a rollercoaster of emotions to witness his recent stint as Gambit and the meme-worthy moments that have followed. It seems like every time I meet a new gamer, they greet me with “My name is Jeff,” and I can’t help but smile and think, “I wonder if Channing Tatum ever gets tired of this.”

2021 has been quite an extraordinary year for Channing Tatum! Beyond his electrifying X-Men cameo as Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine, he’s also set to appear in the eagerly awaited movie Blink Twice, directed by his partner and fiancee Zoe Kravitz. The former project has generated a flurry of memes featuring Tatum’s amusingly exaggerated Cajun accent, but there’s another viral moment from his career that still leaves him astonished.

As a diehard fan, I had the privilege of chatting with the actor regarding “Blink Twice”. When I inquired if he was aware of how meme-worthy his iconic Gambit line, “Woo, I’m about to make a name for myself here,” would become, he casually responded:

As a gamer, I never anticipated that line would become a meme. It’s mind-boggling how things catch on in popular culture like that. Just like the phrase “My Name Is Jeff,” which seems so insignificant and not particularly amusing during the initial table read. I remember thinking, “Whatever.” But then, boy oh boy, I’ve never gone through airport security without someone quoting it to me!

In simpler terms, it’s common for people to quote the line from “22 Jump Street” when they first meet me due to my association with TopMob. Over time, it’s become so routine that even Channing Tatum and I could find common ground over it, as evidenced in the video at the beginning of this article.

It’s possible that Channing Tatum wasn’t prepared for the meme, but that appears to be the most natural way for memes to emerge. As explained by his costar, Naomi Ackie, in her insightful perspective, this is essentially how they come into being.

It demonstrates that you shouldn’t strive to become a meme; instead, simply be yourself, and if the opportunity for becoming a meme arises naturally, it will do so.

I found it somewhat unexpected that the response to “22 Jump Street” was not as enthusiastic as I expected, given that the “My Name Is Jeff” scene is undeniably funny. Channing Tatum played a significant role in making those movies successful, often improvising key scenes. There’s always talk about a potential “23 Jump Street,” and we fans can only cross our fingers in hopes that it becomes a reality. To jog your memory, here’s a reminder of the iconic scene:

Moving forward to recent topics: “Blink Twice” is a fantastic watch! In our review, we labeled it as “an unexpectedly cool thriller.” After listening to my interviews with the cast and debutant director Zoë Kravitz, it’s clear how they infused the film with such contagious enthusiasm.

Look forward to catching “Blink Twice” in cinemas this coming Friday, August 23rd! Stay tuned with us at TopMob for all the upcoming movie releases in 2024 and the latest updates on them.
