‘It’s A Family Show’: Dexter: Original Sin’s Creator Breaks Down Expanding On Harry’s Backstory In The Prequel And It Makes Me Want To Rewatch The Original

After years of following the twisted tale of Dexter Morgan, I must admit that I never truly understood the enigma that was his father, Harry. However, with the arrival of Dexter: Original Sin, I have finally been given a chance to delve deeper into the mind of the man who shaped the killer we all know and love.

As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I must warn you that the insights I’m about to share are filled with spoilers for the latest seasons of Dexter, specifically Dexter: New Blood and the opening episode of Dexter: Original Sin. If you haven’t had a chance to watch them yet, I strongly recommend catching up on these gripping series by streaming them through your Paramount+ subscription that includes Showtime. Enjoy the thrill!

In discussing the main character of Dexter, it’s been fragmented bits and snippets about his past that we’ve gotten over time, but the one character who always seemed mysterious or almost spectral was Dexter’s father, Harry. However, with the release of Dexter: Original Sin, we now have a deeper look into the mind of the man who shaped the killer. Hearing creator Clyde Phillips explain his backstory made me eager to rewatch the original series from the beginning.

In Dexter, James Remar portrayed Harry, a pivotal character in one of Showtime’s top-rated series. For the prequel, however, Christian Slater stepped into the role of Harry. The prequel is providing additional insights into Harry’s personal background. When I discussed the exploration of Harry’s backstory with Phillips, the showrunner emphasized that at its heart, Dexter revolves around family themes. Consequently, the prequel offers a chance to delve deeper into these family dynamics, such as the main character’s father figure.

Dexter can be categorized as a multi-faceted series, including being a show that focuses on a father-son dynamic and a family-oriented storyline. It also incorporates humor, and approximately half of the episodes unfold within their home rather than at the kill site.

Phillips highlights a particular scene from the initial episode that reveals Harry, a character in the story, lost a child earlier due to negligence. Such scenes served as a powerful motivator for Phillips and his team, providing them with the necessary “boost” to delve deeper into understanding Harry’s complex character. Furthermore, this exploration extends to Dexter’s family life, offering more insights in this new season. As we proceed, we uncover details about how Dexter mastered the art of murder, transformed into a blood splatter analyst, and other intriguing aspects. Phillips went on to explain…

That swimming pool scene is really cathartic and just releases storytelling and motivation and understanding of the character. And it really gave us a good kick in the butt to get going on understanding who Harry is, and what his relationship is with his colleagues and what his relationship is, more importantly, with his children.

I hadn’t considered Dexter as a family-friendly series, but Phillips’ description has me eager to rewatch the entire show from start to finish. Some viewers have criticized both the original ending of Dexter and the explosive finale of Dexter: New Blood.

Discovering more about Harry’s life and the unique qualities that define him on “Dexter: Original Sin” has given me a much deeper understanding of who he is, as well as the significant influence he has over Dexter in general. In the original series, it often seemed like Dexter was heavily influenced by Harry and his moral compass. Now, we get to witness their relationship develop in detail during Harry’s younger years.

Original Sin, savoring the prequel experience. Regardless of your choice, you’ll undoubtedly appreciate Harry in a different light this time. You may even find yourself agreeing with Phillips that Dexter is as much a family show as he does.
