In the 2025 TV lineup, American Idol will feature an old yet new judge among its panel. Carrie Underwood, who won Season 4 of American Idol in 2005, is set to join the judges on Season 23, marking a nostalgic return for her. This means she’ll be reunited with Ryan Seacrest, who has been hosting the show since its inception and is eager to ensure this season will be a triumph for Underwood.
According to a source from OK! magazine, Ryan Seacrest is rumored to be mentoring Carrie Underwood as she gears up for her return to American Idol. It’s also reported that he has asked his fellow judges, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, to offer similar support to her. The source added:
As a passionate cinephile, I eagerly wish to express my desire for her to feel genuinely welcomed, not merely as a cherished friend but also because I envision her gracing our screens beyond a single season. To me, it’s more than just a professional opportunity; it’s a significant coup to have one of our show’s most celebrated success stories occupying the coveted judges’ seat. I firmly believe that her presence will serve as an inspiring beacon for all our aspiring contestants.
Ryan Seacrest is well aware of how significant a victory it was to secure one of the most accomplished contestants from ‘American Idol’, and the longer she stays, the more beneficial it will be. Frankly, there aren’t many more prominent figures they could have selected, with Kelly Clarkson or Jennifer Hudson (two former coaches on ‘The Voice’) being among the few equally renowned alumni that readily come to mind.
Lionsgate Richie and Luke Bryan understand well the significance of having a past victor by their side, since they’ve both mentioned that one of Carrie Underwood’s major assets is her ability to provide firsthand insights into what contestants are going through. It’s only natural that Ryan Seacrest, along with the entire American Idol production team, would want to retain her presence for as many seasons as feasible.
Besides boasting the necessary experience and achievements that could motivate the competitors, Carrie Underwood seems well-equipped for the role as well. Katy Perry expressed her expectation that their replacement would be straightforward with constructive feedback, and Clay Aiken concurred, acknowledging that candid criticism received in previous seasons of the show was beneficial to him too.
The singer behind “Before He Cheats” is expected to offer a blend of past and present, as she’s expressed her intention to be truthful yet encouraging when interacting with the contestants.
As a devoted movie buff, I’m not alone in my admiration for Carrie Underwood. Former judges like Keith Urban, Randy Jackson, and Simon Cowell have sung her praises too! In fact, Cowell has even hinted that the job isn’t as tough as people might think.
Randy Jackson, who sat on the panel with Underwood during her season, goes a step further. He recalls her audition as one of his all-time favorites!
As a diehard fan, I can’t wait to witness Carrie Underwood uncover her own favorite auditions and hopefully guide aspiring singers towards achieving the same level of success she has! The 23rd season of American Idol gets underway at 10:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, March 2, following the Oscars, before moving to its regular timeslot at 8 p.m. ET on Sunday, March 9. Episodes will be accessible for streaming with a Hulu subscription the following day.
