‘It’s A Point Of Pride For Us:’ How Agatha All Along’s Team Convinced Marvel To Sign On For A Nude Scene For Only The Second Time Ever

As a lifelong Marvel fan with a soft spot for the witty and the weird, I must say that the debut of Agatha All Along has truly been a delightful surprise. Having binge-watched the first two episodes multiple times (because who can resist Kathryn Hahn’s enchanting performance?), I find myself eagerly anticipating each new Wednesday installment on Disney+.

Spoilers ahead for the premiere of Agatha All Along.

As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but feel pumped about the ongoing expansion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, whether it’s on the big screen or through my streaming service (Disney+). Just recently, subscribers like myself got a treat with the first two episodes of Agatha All Along, a spin-off from the thrilling finale of WandaVision. Interestingly enough, the team behind this show managed to convince Marvel for only the second time ever to include a nude scene in their production.

The information about “Agatha All Along” is still developing, but its two-part premiere undeniably caused a stir. Notably, there’s a scene where Agatha exits her home without clothing following Wanda’s spell. This is the second instance of nudity in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Chris Hemsworth’s derriere being revealed in “Thor: Love & Thunder” as the first. In an interview with TV Line, producer/director Jac Schaeffer shared that Kevin Feige responded with a surprised (“really?”) and went on to explain why the nudity was essential for the scene’s impact. According to Schaeffer:

This story is deeply rooted in the character’s development. It avoids exploitation or sexualization, instead focusing on the witch and her personal goals. In this specific scene, she demands answers, disregarding modesty if necessary. Thus, this aspect represents a source of honor for us.

The discussion is clear. In the initial episode of “Agatha All Along,” we see Agatha resurrected following the “Mare of Easttown” parody, and she’s anxious to catch up on events from the past three years since her encounter with the Scarlet Witch. Despite being nude, this doesn’t faze her, but her neighbor John Collins (who appeared in “WandaVision”) certainly seems bewildered. The scene is engagingly portrayed throughout the premiere.

As a dedicated Marvel fanatic, I’ve already binged through the two-episode premiere of Agatha All Along multiple times, spotting all the clever connections to WandaVision and Doctor Strange 2. Recently, TopMob had an exclusive chat with producer Mary Livanos about the adult content in the opening episode, where she shared that it was Kathryn Hahn herself who advocated for those scenes. In her own words:

If you’re familiar with Kathryn Hahn’s acting portfolio, her appearance in Marvel might be a slight novelty, but certainly not to Kathryn Hahn herself. Moreover, it was an idea she originated. In my opinion, it aligns perfectly with the character of Agatha Harkness to express such emotions. Consequently, I believe it suited the character well. Therefore, we were overjoyed to witness that brilliantly comedic scene.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), both instances where nudity was shown were used for comedic effect. However, the scene from “Agatha All Along” seemed more crucial to the storyline. This scene served as a significant revelation, indicating that Agatha, our familiar villain, had regained control of her body again. Agatha’s character is quite vibrant, and this scene emphasized her newfound freedom, reinforcing her powerful presence in the narrative.

Audience reactions have been intense towards the initial two episodes of “Agatha All Along“. It’s intriguing to ponder how this series could influence future Marvel films, particularly in terms of Wanda’s possible role within the narrative.

Every Wednesday, you can catch the latest episodes of “Agatha All Along” streaming on Disney+. Make sure to check the television premiere schedule for your upcoming binge-watching session.
