As a long-time fan of Kaitlin Olson’s work, it’s been nothing short of a delight to witness her soaring success in the world of television. From her hilarious antics as Sweet Dee on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia to her commanding presence as Morgan in High Potential, Olson has proven time and again that she’s not just a comedic genius, but also an incredibly versatile actress.
Kaitlin Olson, famously known for portraying Sweet Dee in ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ for its sixteen seasons, stepped into the limelight again on ABC’s fall 2024 TV schedule as the lead in ‘High Potential’. Balancing drama and humor skillfully in her role as Morgan, this crime series has garnered high ratings, a testament to Olson’s talent. Kat Coiro, a seasoned director who worked with Olson on both ‘Always Sunny’ and ‘The Mick’, expressed to TopMob that it was long overdue for Olson to secure a leading role, likening her potential to the legendary Kathy Bates.
Prior to joining the cast of CBS’s “Matlock,” starring Kathy Bates, in both director and executive producer roles, Kat Coiro previously directed five episodes of Kaitlin Olson’s now-defunct sitcom “The Mick” and four episodes of “Always Sunny.” You can currently stream these episodes on Hulu. During our conversation with Coiro, I enquired about Olson’s impressive performance as the leading lady in “High Potential,” to which she responded:
As someone who has spent years in the entertainment industry, I must say that Kaitlin is truly a comedic genius. One of my earliest experiences in television was working with her on The Mick, and it was an absolute joy. That show had a special place in my heart, and much of that was due to Kaitlin’s hilarious performances. Not only was she funny, but Kathy [Bates] also brought an incredible work ethic to the set every day. It’s clear that these women are the real deal, and I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to work with them both.
1) Since the director complimented Kathy Bates for her “perseverance, dedication, and warmth,” likening Kaitlin Olson to her is a form of praise! It’s worth noting that Matlock and High Potential, two highly discussed freshman shows airing this fall on rival networks, have been generating buzz. (Matlock can be streamed with a Paramount+ subscription.)
Kaitlin Olson is undeniably gaining more visibility on television networks as It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17 nears, and Kat Coiro shed light on why her promotion to the lead role has been overdue: it’s simply a case of long-awaited recognition for her talent.
I’ve consistently felt that she was an undervalued comedic talent following The Mick and Always Sunny. Seeing her on Hacks brought me immense joy, and I knew the show she had in the works would be a hit because she’s simply incredible. It feels like television is making a strong comeback with Matlock and High Potential.
Among the standout shows gracing fall broadcast network television this season, “Matlock” and “High Potential” have undeniably made a significant impact. Notably, “Matlock,” currently airing on CBS, has already secured a Season 2 renewal following Kathy Bates’ highly anticipated return to TV after just two episodes. Conversely, ABC has yet to confirm a second season for “High Potential,” but given the positive response to Olson’s portrayal of Morgan, there’s a strong likelihood of her reprising the role in future episodes. Despite their distinct narratives, both shows have resonated with viewers, as evidenced by their impressive ratings – it seems audiences can’t get enough of Kathy Bates and Olson leading their respective series.
