It’s Always Sunny’s Kaitlin Olson Shares Thoughts On Fans Screaming ‘Shut Up, Bird!’ At Her In Public, And It’s More Proof That She’s The Best

In the show “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” the gang has caused harm to many lives, but none more so than Sweet Dee, portrayed by Kaitlin Olson, who is frequently criticized and yelled at within the group. However, Dee stands out as a unique case where victim-blaming seems effective, given her moral shortcomings are comparable to those of the rest of the gang. Despite the harsh treatment her character endures, Olson doesn’t seem to mind being called “Shut up, bird!” by fans as frequently as they do.

Demonstrating yet again her immense value within the entertainment world, Olson had a side-splitting chat with Conan O’Brien for his podcast, “Conan Needs a Friend“. This wasn’t just an opportunity to talk about the renewal of her hit ABC show, “High Potential“, and the approaching 17th season of “It’s Always Sunny“, but also to share some laughs. When the discussion turned to fan interactions, with O’Brien sharing Three Stooges stories, Olson admitted that she is often referred to as “bird” in public on a regular basis. In her words:

Indeed, that’s quite an interesting dialogue!

“Oh, yes, Dee is a bird. The bird seems to be quite talkative, doesn’t it? Well, my kids find it hilarious when I tell it to ‘Hush now, little birdie.’ They think it’s the funniest thing in the world and they enjoy it every day.

Although I don’t approve of fans shouting at celebrities during their personal moments or when they’re focusing on something, there’s an ironic humor in a stranger yelling “Shut up, bird!” at someone as a display of affection. If she didn’t appreciate it, her ongoing struggles would be less entertaining to contemplate.

Yet, she explicitly conveyed this to O’Brien & Co.: She’s completely satisfied with his level of achievement and can’t fathom why some sections of the fanbase are excessively protective about it, defending her unnecessarily on social media platforms. In her own terms:

It seems just as absurd for someone to shield a celebrity from on-screen jabs as it would be for me to worship Kaitlin Olson like a deity solely because she tolerates such fan comments. However, I can easily envision many other highly strung actors and actresses who wouldn’t appreciate being told to hush so frequently, regardless of the circumstances. (Of course, I’m referring to the most famous feathered friend in showbiz, Big Bird.)

In comparison to her “Always Sunny” peers, she’s quite distinctive in this particular aspect. It’s hard to envision Charlie Day being showered with handmade cat mittens whenever he steps outside, or Glenn Howerton having the D.E.N.N.I.S. System rules shouted at him on public transit. However, I can easily imagine fans bestowing Danny DeVito with rum-filled hams and an assortment of hallucinogens.

Take a look at this fun video montage showing various characters calling Dee a bird. It’s such an entertaining watch, I can’t think of anything more engaging to spend my time on right now.

Fans of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” are eagerly awaiting the return of Dee and the gang for Season 17, slated to air later in the 2025 TV schedule. Details about the antics we can expect from them are scarce, but the prospect of a crossover with “Abbott Elementary” has us excited! The feuding quintet visited a Philadelphia school in early January for some lackadaisical volunteering, and we’re hoping the second part will offer more opportunities for Dennis (played by Charlie Day), who refused to be filmed in the faux documentary.

The following time you encounter Kaitlin Olson in public, feel free to call out “Shut up, bird” to her, but make sure to consider the situation first. If you happen to be in a place specifically related to birds, then you’re free to do so.
