In the 2025 TV lineup, NBC’s One Chicago series will be back from their brief hiatus, and “Chicago P.D.” has some significant events to unfold. Chief Reid shared with Voight that his mother’s demise inspired him to become a police officer, but now Voight must bring him down due to the incriminating evidence Reid holds against him and the Intelligence Unit. Actor Shawn Hatosy, who came on board “P.D.” in Season 12 as Reid, shared insights about these events with TopMob. The closing words of this episode (streaming now with a Peacock subscription) hint at a confrontation between Voight and the deputy chief.
In the episode titled “Greater Good,” it became clear that Reid isn’t just holding dirt on Voight and his team in Intelligence; he managed to swiftly obtain a warrant from a judge and secure a confession surprisingly fast because it appears he has damning information on them too. It’s quite intriguing to watch Reid outsmart Voight, more so after Jason Beghe’s character referenced the series premiere. Given his questionable nature, it seems likely that Reid will cause trouble in the long run, especially since Voight is only sharing secrets with ASA Chapman rather than his entire team.
During my conversation with Shawn Hatosy, I was curious to find out: how secure does Reid feel about possessing damaging information on both influential and wicked individuals? The actor from ‘Animal Kingdom’ replied:
It seems clear that the individual isn’t dumb, but I’ve pondered over his actions because if he continues with these maneuvers, he puts himself in a vulnerable position since enemies will naturally arise. As things between Voight and him become more strained, it’s hard to maintain the friendship they’ve discussed. [laughs] It seems like this situation must evolve somewhere. Given that the other person is smart enough to realize that Voight has a strategy up his sleeve, it will be intriguing to witness how he responds and what impact it will have on their friendship.
Reid appears confident in his control over certain individuals, allowing him to make questionable actions for what he believes is the “Greater Good.” However, being friends with him doesn’t necessarily mean they are close confidants. It’s clear that there are conditions or obligations involved… but according to Hatosy, Reid understands Voight well enough to anticipate a retaliation from the sergeant.
I’m wondering if the revelation about Reid’s mother’s murder will impact Voight and Chapman’s efforts to apprehend him in future episodes. So far, this has been the most significant piece of background information revealed for his character in Season 12, and Shawn Hatosy discussed his feelings on this development.
As a cinephile, I hadn’t realized that backstory about Reid. In Hank’s office scene, there’s a moment where Hank’s grappling with securing a warrant, and Reid walks in, offering assistance. Hank queries, ‘How?’ To which Reid responds, ‘The method isn’t crucial; what matters is getting it done because we’re committed to doing the right thing here.’ It turns out that this revelation sheds light on why Reid chose a career in law enforcement – his mother was tragically murdered during a botched bank robbery. This event served as the driving force behind his ambition to rise through the ranks and achieve success.
As a movie buff, I can’t help but see a touch of drama in the lives of those who choose law enforcement in One Chicago, and let me tell you, PD has always been brimming with officers who don’t always stick to the script. Yet, even someone like Voight, who’s seen it all within the CPD, seems to draw the line when it comes to corruption from someone high up! Hank Voight didn’t mince words:
I’m convinced that it’s an authentic account. His experiences seem to be the foundation for who he is today, and they may explain his flexible moral compass. After all, when faced with a world as harsh and demanding as the one he encountered, it seems he felt compelled to bend the rules in order to combat the villains.
As Chicago P.D. nears the end of Season 12 and the Burzek wedding is coming up, hopefully offering some drama-free moments, when can we expect the storyline involving Voight and Reid to unfold? Patience might be required, as the upcoming episode on March 26 hints at an engaging outing for Marina Squerciati’s Burgess. Check it out:
Each week, the series “Chicago P.D.” is shown last in NBC’s “One Chicago” Wednesday evening lineup, which begins with “Chicago Med” at 8 p.m. Eastern Time (ET), followed by “Chicago Fire” at 9 p.m. ET, and concludes with “P.D.” at 10 p.m. ET. At the moment of writing, none of these shows have been renewed for the future, but given that NBC has only had positive news about two comedies so far in 2025, I don’t view this as a negative sign for “One Chicago.
