As a long-time fan of Law & Order, I couldn’t be more thrilled with the latest developments in the show’s cast. The addition of Maura Tierney as Jessica Brady is a fantastic move, and her chemistry with Mehcad Brooks seems to be off the charts! But it’s the partnership between Reid Scott as Detective Riley and Mehcad Brooks as Detective Shaw that really has me hooked.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my excitement as Law & Order swiftly filled the fall 2024 TV lineup by introducing Maura Tierney as Jessica Brady, stepping into the role previously held by Camryn Manheim’s Lieutenant Kate Dixon. With Dixon moving on, Season 24 promises an intriguing new chapter. Mehcad Brooks, who shares the screen with Tierney, has only shared positive experiences about her joining the cast.
Shaw and Riley have been working together on “Law & Order” since Reid Scott took over from Jeffrey Donovan’s character, Detective Frank Cosgrove. As Mehcad Brooks mentioned, it seems that the two actors developed a rapport quicker than their characters did. I pointed out to Brooks that Season 24 marked the first time Shaw had a partner who lasted more than one season, and he was all praises for establishing that partnership with Scott on the show.
Reid is my brother from another mother, like we were long lost brothers split up at birth. I don’t know what happened, but I’ve never gotten along so well with somebody so fast, and and he says the same thing. If you talk to him and he doesn’t say the same thing, call him a liar. [laughs] Reid and I just have a great time. We have the same sense of humor, both really sarcastic and sardonic. We have a lot of similar interests. We’re both Scorpios. We just get along as human beings, and we both work really hard at our jobs.
On Law & Order, there aren’t many comedic moments, even with the upcoming changes for Season 24. However, it seems that the two detective actors possess a compatible sense of humor that works exceptionally well together. As the actor from Supergirl added:
It’s equally fortunate when you consistently arrive at work, confident that your partner has already completed the tasks, leaving you both amazed and occasionally taken aback by their work. This unexpected turn of events can lead the situation in directions you wouldn’t have anticipated, and having them there to guide and shape this evolution is invaluable.
Reid Scott’s debut season on Law & Order was cut short due to the WGA writers strike, which led to fewer episodes being aired this year. However, it seems that Scott and Mehcad Brooks have had enough time to build a strong partnership, allowing them to bring out the best in each other. Brooks further explained:
There’s an old adage: The script you write, the film you shoot, and the final cut you edit are all different entities. In between these stages, we, the actors, perform our version of the story. It can be read, acted out, and may evoke a particular emotion. However, when two exceptionally prepared actors like Reid and myself collaborate, unexpected magic can occur that even the participants didn’t foresee. This is incredibly rewarding, especially when working alongside such a talented partner.
It’s great news that Law & Order is likely to continue for a whole season, which typically consists of 22 episodes from autumn until the finale in mid-to-late May. This means we can expect more of Shaw and Riley working together in Season 24. Their dedication on set will undoubtedly make their scenes even more enjoyable to watch. On Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET, catch Mehcad Brooks and Reid Scott portraying Detectives Shaw and Riley on NBC. Following this is Law & Order: SVU at 9 p.m. ET, and then Found at 10 p.m. ET. Previously airing in that time slot was Law & Order: Organized Crime, but it was removed from the network and is now available for Season 5 viewing exclusively on Peacock with a subscription.
It is yet to be determined how effectively the show called “Found” will perform as a new addition to NBC’s lineup, which until now had been three consecutive hours of the “Law & Order” franchise. However, I remain hopeful at this stage. As for Mehcad Brooks, he has shared his thoughts on the show taking over the 10 p.m. ET time slot on Thursday evenings.
