The film adaptation of “How To Train Your Dragon“, which was unveiled at CinemaCon in Las Vegas this month, has been praised by fans of the original Dreamworks movie for its impressive animated sequences. Notably, the remake features an almost entirely new cast, except for Gerard Butler who reprises his role as Stoick the Vast. It’s worth mentioning that Butler appeared to be enjoying himself immensely during filming.
At the start of the premiere, Butler and director Dean DeBlois appeared on stage to publicize the upcoming summer 2025 movie release. During CinemaCon 2025, the actor shared his excitement about re-entering the franchise, jokingly noting that Stoick hadn’t aged. There’s a particularly modern explanation for why the handsome Viking looks so great in live action.
Butler: “The franchise has been part of my life for 15 years, but he [Stoick] hasn’t aged a bit.”
Director Dean DeBlois: “The magic of movies.”
Butler: “and Ozempic.”
Butler (also joking): “…I just can’t think of any other actor who could do it justice.”
As a film enthusiast, I find it fascinating how some actors, like America Ferrera and Jay Baruchel, have grown out of their earlier roles since they’re now in their forties. However, when it comes to Duncan LaVelle Butler, he was already 41 when he first voiced Stoick on the big screen in the 2010 animated film. At 55 years old today, he still appears as if he could comfortably fit the bill as Hiccup’s father. The actor himself credits “Ozempic” for maintaining his youthful appearance.
I’m genuinely thrilled that the studio managed to secure Gerard Butler for the upcoming movie and presented him at Universal’s CinemaCon 2025. Even though some characters may have new faces, it’s comforting to have a consistent element like Butler to bridge the franchise into this fresh chapter of its history.
Apart from understanding that Butler was indeed joking about not finding another suitable actor, there’s an element of truth behind his statement. Stoick must have been a delight to voice in 2010, but reprising the role with the massive beard and Viking helmet, embodying the larger-than-life character once more seems exhilarating – almost like a burst of fiery dragon breath.
Previously, Butler referred to the live-action costume as “five pieces of hell,” which is unexpected given his onscreen and onstage enjoyment. This sentiment seems reminiscent of when the late Ray Stevenson wore a similar outfit for a Marvel film, revealing in an interview that he needed an ice pack to stay cool.
Despite the challenges of playing a bearded wonder, there’s some encouraging news – Universal and Dreamworks have announced plans for a second live-action movie. Even better, they’ve already developed a blueprint for this sequel, so Taran Butler may not need to keep the fur coat and Viking beard indefinitely.
