Stepping into the realm of animated television reviews, I must express my excitement about the renewal of the series that’s poised to challenge the legendary “Avatar: The Last Airbender” – a title held high since its premiere on Nickelodeon from 2005 to 2008. What made “Avatar” stand out was its unflinching approach to tackle themes seldom explored in children’s media, all the while maintaining top-notch animation and music quality. This groundbreaking show even earned a Peabody Award for its “deeply nuanced characters, intricate relationship dynamics that were rare for a cartoon series, and a thoughtful portrayal of the impact of warfare.” The anticipation for the second season is palpable!
Due to its widespread appeal, the Avatar universe has grown to encompass comics, novels, a sequel series, and live-action versions. Notably, Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender is currently adapting it for the big screen. Few animated shows that cater to both adults and children have achieved such high levels of success, creating a vast legacy. However, HBO Max and Cartoon Network’s new series has managed to challenge Avatar: The Last Airbender in terms of popularity.
Iyanu Is Renewed For Season 2 & Cartoon Network Is Making 2 Movies
The Iyanu World & Characters Will Continue To Expand
In the animated TV series titled “Iyanu,” inspired by Yoruba cultures, we follow the journey of an orphan teenager named Iyanu who discovers she possesses magical powers long thought extinct since the Age of Wonders. Alongside her two companions, Iyanu embarks on an adventure to uncover her past and the hidden truths about Yorubaland. This fantasy-adventure children’s show, similar to “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” debuted in April 2025 to a warm reception from fans and critics alike.
Just over a month since its debut, Variety reported that Cartoon Network and HBO Max have greenlit another season for the show, which is “Iyanu”. Furthermore, they’ve revealed plans for two feature-length movies set within the “Iyanu” universe. The first movie, titled “The Age of Wonders“, is scheduled to hit screens in 2025 and will delve deeper into the show’s backstory and world development, taking place 500 years before the TV series begins. Unfortunately, details about the plot or characters in the second film have yet to be disclosed, but it’s slated for release in 2026.
Our Take On Iyanu Season 2 & The Movies
Iyanu Could Be A Cultural Touchstone If It Succeeds Like Avatar: The Last Airbender
Regardless of whether you view Iyanu as a competitor or a spiritual heir, the resemblances between the Cartoon Network/HBO Max show and Avatar: The Last Airbender are striking. After watching both series, I am convinced that Avatar paved the way for Iyanu to excel, and indeed, it has done so spectacularly.
If seasons 2 and subsequent films continue to deliver top-notch animation and storytelling like season 1, “Iyanu” might become a significant cultural reference for the younger generations of Gen Z and Gen Alpha, similar to how “Avatar: The Last Airbender” resonated with younger Millennials and Gen Z. Furthermore, due to its timeless themes and appeal to adults, “Iyanu” could potentially establish a broader franchise in the long run, much like “Avatar: The Last Airbender” did.
