J.K. Simmons Reveals He Initially Passed on His Iconic Comic Book Role

As a seasoned film enthusiast with a penchant for unraveling the nuances of characters and storylines, I must say that J.K. Simmons‘ transformation into Omni-Man in Prime Video’s Invincible has been nothing short of mesmerizing. It’s fascinating to learn about the serendipitous journey that led him to this iconic role – a testament to the power of second chances and trusting one’s instincts.

Although J.K. Simmons gained fame for his portrayal of the villainous Omni-Man in Invincible on Prime Video, which is now recognized as one of the defining superhero antagonists of the 21st century, he initially declined the role before ultimately agreeing to rejoin the cast for the critically acclaimed series. Known as Nolan Grayson on the show, Omni-Man was once Earth’s mightiest hero, but he later began killing other superheroes to pave the way for his species’ invasion and domination of the planet. Omni-Man presents a brutal and autocratic twist on DC Comics’ Superman, making him one of the most beloved characters from Prime Video’s Emmy-nominated animated series.

In a chat with GQ, J.K. Simmons shared insights about his standout roles throughout his esteemed acting career. During their conversation about his voice acting part in Invincible, Simmons disclosed that initially, he was offered a distinct character for the series but felt it wasn’t suitable for him. He declined the role. However, when the studio approached him again, asking Simmons to audition for Omni-Man, he accepted the offer and said:

“Initially, I reviewed a single script offered to me, finding it exceptional. Originally, they had proposed another role for me, but I couldn’t visualize myself fitting that character due to the animation aspect. I declined the offer. Later on, I’m unsure of the timeline, they asked me to play Nolan, Omni-Man instead.”

Making its premiere on Amazon Prime Video in 2021, the series Invincible was based on the comic books of the same name by Robert Kirkman (the mastermind behind The Walking Dead). Over the course of two seasons, the show has garnered almost universally positive reviews; Season 1 earning a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while Season 2 boasts a perfect 100%. In keeping with the spirit of modern-day social media, Invincible isn’t just an exceptional TV show, it has also become a pop culture sensation due to the countless memes… many of which center around Omni-Man. The quote, “Think Mark, think,” from Season 1, spoken by Omni-Man, has seeped into popular culture and continues to be referenced by fans worldwide. Frankly, it’s hard to envision anyone else delivering that line as effectively as Simmons did.

As I stepped into the role of Omni-Man, I never anticipated the massive success this show would achieve. Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate enough to embody some truly iconic characters, such as J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, the chilling Fletcher in Whiplash, and even the timeless Yellow M&M across three decades of advertisements. Yet, it’s the fans of Invincible who approach me most often, a testament to the profound influence this series has exerted. In my own words:

“Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine it would become this phenomenon – iconic, explosively popular. People approach me on the street more about Invincible and Omni-Man than any other topic we’re discussing today. It’s made quite an impact, especially in animation where there are no limits. This ride has been nothing short of exciting and I can’t wait to see where it takes us next.”

Actors like J.K. Simmons, Steven Yeun, Sandra Oh, Gillian Jacobs, Zazie Beetz, Walton Goggins, Jason Mantzoukas, Zachary Quinto, and others from the hit series Invincible are set to reprise their roles for the show’s third season. Although no trailers or footage have been unveiled yet for Season 3, creator Robert Kirkman has given fans a sneak peek at Invincible’s updated suit as they eagerly await the series’ return.

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I’ve got to say, the third season of “Invincible” hasn’t yet been assigned an official air date. However, you can stream the first two captivating seasons right now on Amazon Prime Video!
