Imtiaz Ali is one of the top-notch directors in Bollywood, known for powerful and influential storytelling. Yet, it’s worth noting that he hasn’t been immune to legal issues related to his films. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Imtiaz Ali discussed a scene from his hit movie “Jab We Met” which resulted in the issuance of a non-bailable warrant against him and brought him into some legal trouble.
At the fan Q&A session, the director of Tamasha was inquired if he creates his films while keeping his ideas and perspectives intact, or if adjustments are made to steer clear of potentially offending certain audience segments.
The director often ponders if what he’s creating could potentially harm individuals or upset a group. If he believes his genuine aim of presenting something doesn’t cause harm in any fashion, he proceeds as planned; otherwise, he adjusts the situation.
Speaking about the topic at hand, Imtiaz recounted an intriguing experience involving a legal dispute. He found himself under scrutiny due to allegations that he portrayed Ratlam negatively in the film Jab We Met. The director humorously commented, “The first time I received a court summons and later had a non-bailable arrest warrant issued against me was all because of Ratlam (he chuckles).
In further explanation, the filmmaker mentioned that the accusations against him claimed that a well-known snack spot had been tarnished in the movie directed by Imtiaz Ali, portraying it as a locale associated with the red-light district.
Later, Imtiaz added that he was filming Love Aaj Kal when Producer Dinesh Vijan approached him and disclosed a case along with a non-bailable arrest warrant. He explained, “I was shooting in Kolkata (Calcutta) at the time, and Dino tells me – Sir, there’s a non-bailable arrest warrant. If they find out where you are, they will come and take you into custody. I replied, ‘The paper just came out today; we’re still shooting here in Kolkata, and he even told me the location. Well, they’re on their way then,’ (laughs). Dino was worried that it would be a significant loss for him.
In addition to the amusing event, Imtiaz commented with everyone on set feeling tense, there was Dolly Ahluwalia who joked – “I’ll make rotis with my own hands and feed them to you through the bars.” (Don’t worry)
