Jack Reacher’s Surprising Inspiration: Sherlock Holmes

Lee Child’s Jack Reacher character has gained significant popularity as one of today’s most recognized action figures, further boosted by the successful Prime Video series titled Reacher, with musclebound Alan Ritchson portraying the title role of the wandering vigilante. What might come as a surprise is that the roots of this character are not found in action stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger or James Bond, but rather in a celebrated literary figure renowned for his exceptional detective abilities.

Instead of discussing Batman, we’re referring to Sherlock Holmes, the fictional detective who was created by British author Arthur Conan Doyle and has been a popular character in books, films, and TV shows for many years. In an interview with Men’s Journal, Child mentioned that the character of Reacher, the former soldier-turned-equalizer, was more inspired by Sherlock Holmes rather than the typical action heroes one might associate with him.

In a deliberate tribute, I intentionally incorporated an element reminiscent of Sherlock Holmes in my first book, Killing Floor. In this instance, Reacher, much like Holmes, makes an astute observation about Finley, the cop, by noticing that he’s divorced and quit smoking in April.

Jack Reacher & Sherlock Holmes Are More Alike Than You May Think

Indeed, Jack Reacher and Sherlock Holmes both share exceptional skills in investigation, although their physical appearances may lead you to believe otherwise. If you look beyond the impressive physiques, you’ll find that Reacher employs deductive reasoning similar to Holmes. Conversely, Holmes’ prowess in action is often overshadowed by his reputation as a great detective. As Lee Child points out…

If you delve into the original works by Conan Doyle, you’ll find that Sherlock Holmes and Jack Reacher are both capable of being quite physical in combat. They aren’t just intellectual powerhouses; they can hold their own in a street fight as well.

In the first season of “Reacher,” portrayed by Alan Ritchson, we follow a previous U.S. Army military police officer turned nomadic vigilante who is thrust back into action after being falsely accused of murder. This series is adapted from the novels penned by Lee Child. The second season continues the tale of our heroic drifter as he takes on another mission when his former military comrades mysteriously start meeting their ends. Recently concluded, the third season draws inspiration from the seventh book in the series, “Persuader,” and sees our protagonist delving deep into a massive criminal network while attempting to save an endangered undercover DEA informant. In this world of hidden truths and rampant violence, he also confronts some lingering issues from his own past.

In the climactic scenes of Reacher Season 3, our protagonist engages in a fierce water-based fight with his formidable adversary Paulie, echoing the combat between Sherlock Holmes and Moriarty at Reichenbach in “The Final Problem.” Although Paulie is not Moriarty himself, the parallels are strikingly obvious. Jack Reacher’s author, Lee Child, neither confirms nor denies these similarities, but he does express his admiration for Sherlock Holmes, stating, “I have a deep affection for Sherlock Holmes.

The world of “Reacher” is poised to grow beyond Season 3, as the primary series has been officially renewed for Season 4. Moreover, a separate series centered around Sten’s Frances Neagley, a private investigator within Jack Reacher’s network, is now being developed.
