In December 2024, just before the premiere of both Nosferatu and Wolf Man, it was disclosed that Lee Cronin, director of Evil Dead Rise, would be rebooting The Mummy for Blumhouse and Atomic Monster. Interestingly, Cronin’s interpretation of the character won’t align with Universal Monsters’ traditional portrayal. Instead, a unique rendition of The Mummy is being developed by New Line Cinema, the studio behind Evil Dead Rise. As for the latest Mummy film, one actor from the Transformers franchise has joined as the new leading character, though it seems he won’t be playing the main monster in this adaptation.
According to the latest reports from Deadline, Jack Reynor has been chosen for the main character in The Mummy. This means he won’t be wrapped up like a mummy but instead will play the human character being menaced by the Mummy. Reynor is well-known for his roles in Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014) and the horror film Midsommar (2019), which starred Florence Pugh. He’s also worked with director John Carney, appearing in Sing Street (2016) and Flora and Son (2023).
The upcoming movie titled “The Mummy” marks the initial production of the combined efforts between Blumhouse and Atomic Monster. As of now, the specific dates for filming “The Mummy” have not been disclosed, but it is set to take place in both Ireland and Spain. The planned release date for this film is April 17, 2026. Interestingly, this same release window was occupied by Cronin’s “Evil Dead Rise” back in 2023, which earned $67 million domestically and $147 million globally on a budget of $19 million.
‘The Mummy’ Is the Latest Monster Franchise to Receive Resurrection
Although The Mummy is generally recognized as a character within the public domain, it’s typically the version from the 1932 Universal Monster film featuring Boris Karloff that people are familiar with. This franchise, particularly, has gained recognition among contemporary audiences through the 1999 action remake starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. However, in contrast to its predecessors, the 2017 version of The Mummy, produced by Universal Pictures and starring Tom Cruise, failed at the box office, effectively ending Universal Pictures’ ambitions for a unified movie universe based on their classic monster characters called The Dark Universe.
The most recognized Mummy films outside of Universal Pictures are the Hammer Horror series. Starring Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, the 1959 film “The Mummy” offered a fresh take on traditional monsters and was greatly influenced by the original Universal Pictures film and its subsequent installments. The Hammer Mummy franchise includes four movies: “The Curse of the Mummy’s Tomb” (1964), “The Mummy’s Shroud” (1967), and “Blood from the Mummy’s Tomb” (1971).
Cronin’s reimagining is part of a fresh trend in Hollywood where popular studios like Netflix and Warner Bros. are revamping iconic monster stories originally owned by Universal Pictures. Netflix plans to release Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of Frankenstein in November 2025, while Warner Bros. is set to launch Maggie Gyllenhaal’s modernized portrayal of The Bride of Frankenstein, titled The Bride!, on March 6, 2026. Additionally, through DC Studios, Warner Bros. is giving a fresh perspective to various classic monsters with Creature Commandos, where Season 1 introduced Eric Frankenstein and The Bride, hinting at the upcoming appearance of a Mummy character called Khalis in the season finale. Although Universal Pictures may be synonymous with these classic monsters, it appears that monster-themed productions are proving profitable across Hollywood.
