Jack Shainman Gallery has unveiled its brand-new, expansive Tribeca flagship, spanning 20,000 square feet, and is commencing this space with a grand solo exhibition titled “Amalgams and Graphts“. This exhibition, by Chicago-based artist Nick Cave, will be on display until March 15. The show presents two new series that further develop Cave’s renowned artistic practice into fresh realms of concept and materials.
The exhibit initiates with a trio of bronze sculptures titled “Amalgams“, which blend casts of Cave’s own body with organic growth patterns. These sculptures are an extension of his renowned Soundsuit series, inspired by the 1991 police beating of Rodney King. The pieces propose diverse and resilient interpretations of conventional public art. After the exhibition concludes, the monumental centerpiece, “Amalgam (Origin)”, standing at 26 feet tall, will become a permanent addition to the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park’s collection in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Introducing alongside the bronzes is a fresh collection of artworks titled Graphts, which combines hand-stitched self-portraits using needlepoint with antique serving trays embellished with flowery patterns. Although needlepoint may suggest upper-class pastimes, the patchwork of serving trays draws upon Black quilting heritage, sparking a conversation about servitude and social class.
Nestled within the iconic Clock Tower Building, I find myself in a gallery that beautifully maintains the opulence of its Beaux-Arts bank hall, boasting 29-foot-high coffered ceilings, grand staircases, and arched windows. This magnificent setting serves as an ideal canvas for Cave’s inaugural New York exhibition since his Guggenheim retrospective in 2022.
