Jahan Loh Explores Interplanetary Diaspora in 'POSTCARDS FROM SPACE'

As a gamer who’s spent countless hours exploring virtual galaxies and battling alien creatures, I must say that Jahan Loh’s “POSTCARDS FROM SPACE” exhibition is a cosmic masterpiece! The blending of Eastern iconography, pop culture motifs, and sci-fi tones in each piece feels like stepping into the next level of my favorite video games.

Following a collaborative project with ACU at the immersive exhibition in Chengdu, Jahan Loh comes back to Singapore, revealing his newest solo exhibit titled “POSTCARDS FROM SPACE“.

Showcasing a fresh collection of expansive paintings, Loh’s work centers around the theme of “interplanetary diaspora,” depicting a far-off time when humans have colonized exoplanets and other celestial bodies. His unique style, which combines Eastern symbolism, popular culture references, and a science fiction atmosphere, is prominently displayed in this exhibition. Each painting is not only visually captivating but also carries an eerie surrealism that hints at the digital realm.

Consistent with the dominant cosmic motif, all artworks bear names derived from real celestial entities. In “天宮星:: GLIESE 667CC,” Loh portrays a pair of youthful figures dressed in bright spacesuits adorned with elaborate embroideries, reminiscent of blossoming landscapes that mimic ancient Chinese embroidery artistry. The futuristic aspect is accentuated by what appears to be a drifting spacecraft, depicted as graffiti-style writing.
